Central Church 5th & 6th Grade Retreat
Meet Me at the River
Come and join us for the 15th year of Children's Ministry's annual 5th & 6th grade retreat. The theme this year is Special Ops Training. The kids will learn that God has chosen them for a special, unique mission but that there is an enemy who uses deception to try to defeat us. However, God has given us strength and peace in order to help us be His ambassadors. Kids will be divided into squads (cabin groups of 8) and will participate in Field Ops, Night Ops, Mission Briefings, a USO show, Maneuvers, and more.
The cost is $35 and is due in full by October 21. Registration is only available online. Transportation is provided and required from the church. The event takes place near the Mississippi River, hence the name, "Meet Me at the River". The children participate in a service at the river. The focus of this retreat is for the children to grow closer to God and each other as they discover more about themselves. Click here to find out more or to register.

Instant Messages by Cheryl Gradone
Waa! Waa!
"You want a little cheese with that whine?" What a funny expression! Whining and complaining can be a problem for anybody, parents and children. "Why can't I have that?" "Why does she get one and I don't?" "I don't like that!" "That's not fair!" Complaining is contrary to the will of God. We are to give thanks instead. The children of Israel complained in the wilderness, and it did not turn out so good for them. God had delivered them from their enemies and from slavery! How quickly they forgot! How ungrateful! God provided supernatural food for them, and they despised it! It made God furious! Many people lost their lives because of it. And, when they reached the Promise Land, many were not allowed to go in. That sounds serious to me!
What should you do if your child whines and complains? Whatever you do, don't ignore it! With patience and careful teaching, you can help your child develop an attitude of thankfulness instead of complaining. The Bible is filled with passages telling us what God says about complaining. Before dealing with a complaining attitude in your child's heart, it would help to first study the Scriptures to find out what God says about it. Also, Matthew 7:1, 5, says you should examine your own heart before trying to correct your child. Pray diligently about this issue in your child's heart before dealing with his attitude of complaining. It would be better to wait and be prepared than to deal hastily or wrongly in the moment, especially if you have never taught this to your child.
Once you are convinced of the truth from God's Word and you have examined your own heart, plan to teach your child. Children have great memory. If you wait, he won't forget. This will give you a point of reference for ongoing training. Practice giving thanks in all kinds of occasions. Pray for and with your child for God's help. If he complains, gently remind him. Help him by allowing him another opportunity to give thanks instead. It takes time, patience, and diligence. Philippians 2:14-15 says, "Do all things without grumbling or arguing, that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world."
Your child may have legitimate complaints at times. As a loving parent it is important to listen carefully to his complaint. Something could truly be upsetting him. If your child develops a pattern of complaining, you can help him judge his own heart by asking "heart-probing" questions: "Is your attitude showing thankfulness and contentment? (Let him choose). Proverbs 17:22, "A merry heart does good, like medicine." "Instead of complaining, what can you be thankful for in this situation? (Let him give an answer) Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." At this point you can remind him of what God commanded about being content and giving thanks.
There were times at our house when I would make a dinner that was not a favorite with the kids, but was really good. They would complain. I would often take a bite of the delicious, nutritious food that I had lovingly slaved to make for them, tell them how delicious it was, and then help them take the first bite. It was not fun always having to teach them to eat what I cooked, but in the end, they learned how to be grateful. Not only was I preparing good food for them, but I wanted them to be prepared to eat what anyone else prepared without complaining if they were at a friend's house or in the bush of a foreign country. When our daughter Eleanor went to Ecuador, she actually witnessed grub worms being prepared for a group of jungle children. They were being sautéed in a frying pan! No! She did not eat them!! But those children gobbled them down like candy! Your child might not ever eat grub worms, but he can learn to be thankful.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
Ephesians 6:4, "And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord."
