Sangamon County (IL) State's Attorney Still Considering Animal Cruelty Charges Against High School Rodeo Thugs
Horse ShockerThe Sangamon County Attorney's Office continues to investigate and consider possible charges of animal abuse against the National High School Rodeo Association.  The process is made more difficult than necessary because the Illinois Department of Agriculture, which investigated the case and interviewed the stock contractor, failed, among other incompetencies, to identify the culprits involved in shocking and stabbing the animals to make them "perform" despite video and photographic evidence provided by SHARK.

We hope that the state's attorney will do the right thing.  There is so much corruption in Springfield, the capitol of Illinois, starting right at the governor's office and trickling down into seemingly every orifice of the town.   A decision should be forthcoming in the next couple weeks.  We will of course keep you updated on this important issue.

In the meantime, continued pressure from the public to prosecute the case will aid this effort against rodeo abuse.  Please contact the Sangamon County Attorney's Office:

Dodge Dealership Withdraws Rodeo Support!

In a grand example of how a committed, localized effort, can make a direct impact against rodeo abuse, Gary Barbera Dodge has withdrawn sponsorship to the Liberty Pro Rodeo after the Philadelphia-based Rodeo Education Campaign's launch of their "Barbera Brutality" campaign.

A half an hour into the first on-site demonstration at Gary Barbera Dodge, the operations manager came outside to inform the REC demonstrators that the business had withdrawn their support of the rodeo and handed over this statement.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in making this campaign a success! Please contact Gary Barbera Dodge and thank them for their compassionate choice.

Walker County, Texas: Cesspool of Corruption

In a previous update we reported on the assaults committed by rodeo thugs against SHARK investigators in Walker County, Texas.  Investigator Stephanie Wood was stalked, repeatedly harassed and threatened with jail by an out-of-uniform, off-duty goon named John Hooks.  Hooks was determined to stop Stephanie's videotaping of the rodeo, and he was willing to break the same laws he was supposed to enforce to do it.

Both Hooks and SHARK investigator Janet Enoch called the Walker County Sheriff's Department.  When local sheriff's deputies told Hooks that there was nothing illegal about videotaping, Hooks continued to harass Stephanie, going so far as to recruit other people to assist in the harassment, some of whom were rodeo contestants, in spite of a rule in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) stating that its members may not harass spectators.

Later in the day, Janet Enoch and I were both harassed and assaulted by rodeo contestant and thug Marty Jones.  Jones, seen at right, also issued a threat about our leaving the rodeo, prompting Janet to again call the police.  Later in the evening, after the assaults by Marty Jones, Janet called police again.  Incredibly, the woman on the switchboard scolded Janet for, as she put it, "not leaving earlier when you had the chance."

Now, in a demonstration of just how pervasive the corruption of Walker County is, and in spite of clear and incontrovertible video evidence of the assaults, Walker County District Attorney David P. Weeks has declared that he will NOT file any charge against rodeo thug/assailant Marty Jones, calling the assaults, "much ado about nothing."

One can only imagine what the charges would have been had the harassment, attempted intimidation, and assaults happened the other way around.  In that case I expect SHARK investigators would have had felony charges lodged against us!

Click here to see a short video of the criminal behavior of rodeo thug Marty Jones captured by SHARK cameras.

As you will see by reading on our battle is far from over.  We will need your financial support to continue to document the abuses, to educate the public and to power the campaigns to end rodeo sponsorships by corporate sponsors like AT&T, Coca-Cola and Dodge Trucks, and government entities like the US Army.
San Antonio Legal Actions Update
The aftershocks continue from our February trip to San Antonio, Texas to take on AT&T headquarters.  On May 8, 2007 we have a court date to deal with the outrageous traffic tickets we received for legally operating the Tiger truck outside of AT&T's headquarters, and we look forward to exposing the cop who gave us those bogus tickets.

Meanwhile, and so very telling of the "justice" to be found in Texas, the person(s) who committed an extraordinarily dangerous act of reckless driving aimed at the Tiger truck on a highway in San Antonio (as relayed in a previous update) has still not been charged, and it doesn't appear that charges will ever be filed.  This is in spite of video documentation recorded by the Tiger's surveillance video cameras that leave absolutely no doubt as to exactly what happened.

Finally, there will apparently be no action taken against two individuals who filed complaints against the Tiger's crew, falsely claiming that we were harassing drivers of horse-drawn carriages in San Antonio.  Although we obviously are opposed to horse-drawn carriages, especially in city environments, we did not commit any harassment whatsoever of carriage drivers or anyone else, as the Tiger's surveillance cameras from that evening prove.  Filing a false report with police is a misdemeanor in Texas, but apparently the bad guys are allowed to file false reports against us without penalty.

Our struggle for animals is very similar to the struggle for civil rights.  Then as now, there were creeps who committed crimes against activists, while the activists regularly endured charges trumped up against them.  The results of this struggle will depend on our determination and our support.  We have the determination.  We are counting on you for support.  Please don't let us, or our nonhuman friends, down.
Editor, Publisher of The Horse continue to run from SHARK challenge
After The Horse magazine and TheHorse.com published fictional rodeo propaganda glamorizing rodeos in its March 2007 issue, I wrote a long letter to editor Kimberly Brown which detailed the many inaccuracies in her article.  SHARK challenged Brown to support her claims that rodeos enforced humane rules, that few animals are injured, and other falsehoods.  When Brown did not produce the requested information, I followed up with a letter to TheHorse.com's publisher, Stacy Bearse.

Now, both editor and publisher continue to run from not only SHARK's challenge, but many of their readers and other horse supporters.  As a result, The Horse has earned a place on MediaVillains.com, SHARK's web site that exposes clowns posing as journalists who are either incredibly ignorant of the facts, grossly incompetent or outright liars.  A sampling of some of the letters sent to the The Horse by readers and a full account of the propaganda piece can be found HERE.  SHARK hopes the staff of this publication enjoys being exposed to the world.
AT&T Campaign Continues

As reported some time back, I unceremoniously dropped Cingular/AT&T's cell phone service due to the company's sponsorship of rodeos.  AT&T, through a collection company, is now actively harassing me to pay a $175.00 termination charge that I will never pay.  I'm not worried about the possibility of a hit to my credit rating because rodeo victims are worth that and much more.

I figure that every call from the collectors is an opportunity to talk about the issue.  The cycle is fairly established at this point.  A phone drone calls and tries to lay on the pressure, pointing out that extra charges are now being applied to what they say I owe.  I tell them they will get absolutely nothing - not one penny - and why.  They try to get nasty, and then are totally shocked when I just tell them to take me to court so I can tell a judge about their unethical practices.

AT&T has a history of screwing and intimidating customers, so they think they're a pretty tough bunch.  What they apparently haven't run into before is someone who is up for the fight.  These AT&T creeps can call forever and threaten whatever, but they'll never see another penny from me.  I hope you'll join SHARK in telling AT&T to stick their rodeo sponsorship and their business where the sun doesn't shine.

WHY SO CREEPY?
EdWhitacrePerhaps the major factor explaining AT&T's ethical and moral vacuum is its CEO, Edward Whitacre.  Whitacre is a native Texan, and an obvious cowboy wannabe, just like the rodeo thugs, but predictably that only applies when he is dealing with smaller opponents.  Take for example the following excerpts from a 1999 Business Week article:

The son of a railroad engineer, Whitacre grew up trapping frogs and shooting rabbits with his shotgun in the fields of Ennis, Tex., a small railroad town about 40 miles south of Dallas.

And there's more:

Whitacre's ranch in suburban San Antonio is rife with deer, two zebras, and rattlesnakes--which Whitacre casually kills by pinning them with a stick and crushing their heads. His favorite ranch activity is driving his Caterpillar tractor to move debris and dig holes. ''I've been known to run over trees and do stupid things, but I like to do that,'' he says.

Can't you just see it?  This creepy old corporate thug on his tractor knocking over trees cause it makes him feel like a tough guy?  And what's with the killing small animals?  Why don't you pick on someone your own size?  No wonder this pathetic goon love rodeos!  It's too bad that in all of his years, Eddie Whitacre never figured out how to be a real man.

Whitacres' quotes go a long way to explaining why neither he nor his corporate suck-ups will meet with animal protectors, and why AT&T won't stop sponsoring rodeo animal abuse.  My guess is that Whitacre has surrounded himself with a bunch of fellow sickos to help reinforce his psychological illness.

I hope everyone sending money to AT&T will remember these stories of animal serial killer Edward Whitacre, because he, as well as rodeo thugs, are getting some of the money you pay to AT&T.
Former Stray Pup Now Living the Good Life

A number of people have asked about what happened to the young, black stray dog that we rescued while the Tiger was in San Antonio working over AT&T.  Especially with all of the lousy stuff that happens to animals in Texas and all the ugly scenarios we have dealt with there, it is good to be able to bring out a nice Texas animal story, even if it is by way of bringing a dog OUT of the state.

TigerAtCokeAntonia, or "Toni" as she tends to be called, now lives with my ex-wife Jacquie and my daughters Meghan and Eva.  Toni is now a healthy, very smart, VERY energetic youngster who now thinks that life is the greatest thing since doggie treats.  After extensive treatments, Toni's parasites and skin infection are gone, so her incessant scratching is no longer, and she has been spayed.  Everything is so very exciting to her, and she just loves people, tennis balls, frisbees and kitties.  It should be said that Toni's love of kitties doesn't exactly delight Jackie's four cats just yet, but they are getting used to her youthful exuberance.

Here are some pictures of a rare happy animal story to come out of Texas.  We salute Texas activists who are fighting hard for Texas animal victims, for they have an especially tough job on their hands.  With your support, we will continue to be allies in the fight to bring compassion to Texas.

PETA Joins SHARK's campaign against Army's rodeo sponsorship
at right, Army soldiers sing for the opening of a PRCA rodeo, sponsored by the U.S. Army.

We are very happy to report that PETA is aiding SHARK's campaign to terminate the US Army's sponsorship of rodeo, and the effort is paying off.  With SHARK's video footage and pictures as a foundation, PETA is working with lobbyists to inform caring politicians about this outrage.

It is an indefensible fact that while the Army is sending American men and women soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq with inadequate body armor and insufficiently armored vehicles, it is also sponsoring the rodeo mafia to the tune of over $2,000,000 a year.

U.S. Representatives Christopher Shays (Democrat from Connecticut) and Tom Lantos (Democrat from California), members of the Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus, sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and acting Army Secretary Pete Geren expressing their concerns.  This will hopefully lead to increased pressure for the termination of the Army's sponsorship of rodeo.

ArmyCalfSlamAt right, this calf roping abuser wears the U.S. Army logo as he abuses baby cows under Army sponsorship.  Is this the kind of thing our military should be proud to spend tax dollars to support?
