  • Dear Friends,

SHARK's campaign against rodeo sponsor Cingular is underway. Thanks to those of you who have already contacted the company and I hope those of you who have not will do so as soon as possible. I hope you will continue to contact them, perhaps every week or two (or more often) to keep the pressure on by asking if they have decided to do the right thing yet.

Here is the plan for continuing to increase the pressure. We are giving Cingular until January 1, 2007 to drop its rodeo sponsorship. That gives the company more than enough time to do some real research, and if it does so, Cingular will learn of the cruelty and corruption of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), and all of the Rodeo Mafia. SHARK has launched www. C ingularSponsorsCruelty.com

Make a New’s Years Resolution for the Animals--
    Black Calf

If Cingular does NOT agree to end its sponsorship by January 1, 2007 caring people can execute an extra New Years Resolution by dumping Cingular.

This gives us time to tell all of our caring relatives, friends and associates about Cingular's cruelty, and to research a new provider. It will also give us time to inform business media and stock analysts about Cingular's impending loss of market share.

    CowboyUp

At right, one of Cingular's prominent PRCA ads.
    Cowboy Up? Animals Down.

Remember that if you are a Cingular customer you can call the company by simply dialing 611, free of charge and with no loss of minutes in your calling plan. Calling Cingular on your cell phone enables the company to know for certain that you are a customer, and they will know just how much money they are going to lose if you dump them. There is nothing more upsetting to a company than to see such losses heading their way.

If you are not a Cingular customer, you can still have a significant impact by letting them know that when your current contract is up that Cingular will NOT be in the running for your business. See what other people have already written to Cingular at www.CingularSupportsCruelty.com SHARK is challenging Cingular to allow all its customers to terminate their contract with the company on ethical grounds without any termination penalty. So far the company has refused. One alternative is to possibly file a class action lawsuit against Cingular to force it to allow caring people to terminate without penalty for ethical reasons – namely the rodeo sponsorship.

    Steer Mud

Already the issue is on the company's radar. I signed on to Cingular's public forum and raised the rodeo issue. The post almost immediately stirred up a controversy on the forum that far outnumbered all other issues on the site! Many people were aghast at the sponsorship, while those supporting rodeo simply stuck with standard, long discredited arguments, or resorted to juvenile cracks that displayed their single digit IQs. You can log in here to Cingular’s message forum and make an impact by posting a message on the side of the animals.

This Monday SHARK will send Cingular a special pack of information including a DVD of respected television documentaries and exposes on rodeo, as well as some of SHARK's footage. There are also numerous printed media reports uncovering the cruelty and corruption of rodeos. This pack will be going to all of our corporate targets. No company will be able to truthfully claim that it believes rodeos take good care of their animal victims. This doesn't mean they won't try, but then we'll know the type of unethical creeps we're dealing with.

We Can Do It! Here's Why--
    BabyGoatSlammed

I know you are all busy, and that it takes precious time to contact Cingular, especially on a semi-regular basis. But I want you to remember how productive your past efforts have been.

We forced PepsiCo and Coca-Cola out of bullrings. We forced Starbucks Coffee, Campbell Soup, and likely Hilary Duff to stop supporting rodeos. When you wrote letters to a compassionate performer like Carrie Underwood, she voluntarily chose to not perform at the infamous Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. Your pressure forced toy maker Mattel to stop its production of an outrageous Bullfighting Barbie Doll. Your compassion forced Baylor University in Waco, Texas to spend over $1,000,000 to build a better habitat for the school's live bear "mascots."

    Injured bucking horse

This horse, having been used for bucking, is bleeding from his mouth and leg.

Now, with your help, we'll put a stop to Cingular's cruel rodeo sponsorship. SHARK has invited a number of other animal protection organizations to get in on this campaign, and we will list them as they join in. You may remember the In Defense of Animals and PETA helped with the Starbucks campaign, which was a great success.

Please call Cingular right away and demand that it withdraw its rodeo sponsorship, or you will be finding another cell phone provider on January 1, 2007. Then forward any response you receive to SHARK at SHindi@sharkonline.org.
