Dear Friends, The reverberations from an explosive expos� of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo are being felt throughout the rodeo world. The following is a ground-breaking article that completely supports what SHARK has been saying forever: 1) rodeo’s supposed “humane rules” are utterly worthless and ignored2) rodeos hide the number of animals injured and killed 3) rodeo people consider animals to be disposable For years the general media around the country have promoted rodeo and almost completely ignored the massive evidence of blatant cruelty. Now one woman demonstrates that if you look hard enough there are still some true journalists.
SHARK took this photo of a PRCA judge looking on as a horse is shocked to the point of buckling. We never would have guessed that this lesson in journalistic integrity would come from, of all places, Cheyenne, Wyoming. In a country that brags of big strong men, it turns out that the toughest hombre is a woman named Cara Eastwood. SHARK wholeheartedly congratulates the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle for reporting the truth of what will be a locally very unpopular issue – the cruelty of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. The last time was when rodeo veterinarian and PRCA mouthpiece Doug Corey tried to face SHARK president Steve Hindi on live Las Vegas television during the PRCA’s 1997 National Final Rodeo. Steve quietly and professionally took Corey apart to the point the man was close to tears after the confrontation. Unfortunately, Steve did too good of a job, and the rodeo people have been running ever since. Now the Rodeo Mafia hides behind reporters that will write articles that are one-sided to the point of being utterly incredible. In Cara Eastwood’s story, however, there are so many comments from so many rodeo people, SHARK has an opportunity to “debate once again.” So let’s get to it! Please write a big “Thank-You” to the Wyoming- Eagle Tribune and reporter Cara Eastwood (email: outdoors@wyomingnews.com)for having the journalistic integrity to finally expose the inherent abuse in the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. There will be strong pressure from the Rodeo Mafia on both of these papers, and the local media needs to know that the public wants compassion more than cruelty. Encourage these newspapers to continue to follow this issue of abuse and corruption within the Cheyenne Frontier Days. Point out that the www.Sha meOnCheyenne.com website is a hard-hitting resource of graphic images from the 2005 CFD. Urge the editorials to demand that the PRCA be held accountable for the actions, or inaction, of their people and the treatment of the animals they use. From time to time, a rodeo-damaging piece such as this is printed, but this article is by far one of the best. We must keep the momentum going. The seams of the rodeo industry are ripping. We must use the expos� to springboard our efforts to shut down this infamously abusive rodeo. Already, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo has been shunned by Carrie Underwood and was the catalyst to Starbuck’s Coffee halting sponsorship of all rodeos.
