SHARK Update )
Does This Actress/Pop Princess Have A Mean Side? April 6, 2006

Dear Friends,

Anyone who knows the name Hilary Duff will likely think of a young, pretty, always smiling, all-American type singer/actress who's enjoyed quite a bit of success in her young life. Ms. Duff claims to love animals, and has even come out with a line of cruelty-free cosmetics. Unfortunately, it looks like this is a case of a celebrity playing both sides against the middle, as SHARK has discovered a very different side of Hilary Duff.

In March 2005 we learned that Hilary Duff had played a concert at the infamous Houston rodeo, one of the largest rodeos in the country. In fact, the rodeo management credited Duff's performance for record-breaking attendance. At the time SHARK was focusing on the campaign (which is ongoing) against Campbell Soup's sponsorship of rodeos. Although we meant to try getting in touch with her, the campaign had us swamped. I was hopeful that this was just a one-time deal, and that Ms. Duff would have figured that with her success she didn't need to lower herself to doing more rodeos.

This year, however, was a different matter. Not only did Duff play the Houston rodeo again, but she also played a concert at a rodeo in San Antonio, Texas, and possibly others. Additionally, a steer was brutually killed on the night of Duff's performance at the Houston rodeo. Duff's rodeo performance had earned the attention of SHARK So we looked on the Internet to find out where else she was going to be performing. We figured a few visits from the Tiger Truck on her tour route might make her rethink her stance on attracting young people into the archaic and brutal rodeo.

What we learned was truly shocking. It turns out that Duff is not performing in the US at this time. However, she is going to be in Europe. In fact, she is going to be performing in Spain. The shocking part is that Hilary Duff - the animal lover, is planning to perform at a bullring on May 6 in Madrid, Spain!

I would prefer that Ms. Duff simply see the light and take a hard stand against animal abuse in rodeos and bullfighting. This would mean that she promises to never play another rodeo or bullring, and that means canceling the May 6 performance.

My friends, I hope the recent Starbucks' campaign has demonstrated to everyone just how much power you potentially have. The truth is, if more people had protested their local Starbucks across the country and beyond, I think the campaign could have been won months earlier. Regardless, this huge and very rich company backed down to the power of compassion.

Mr. Liotta needs to hear from you and if at all possible your friends, family and associates. We will also be contacting entertainment media to raise the issue with them, and that will bring more pressure. There will be many more developments on this issue unless Ms. Duff moves quickly and decisively.

I hope our supporters will consider sending donations to help us keep SHARK, our campaigns and the Tiger moving forward. We've just come off a campaign that drained us, and we aren't stopping to replenish our financial resources. This is dangerous, but necessary. We have to keep the ball rolling and use the momentum we have built up. Please don't let our animals friends down. There are so many battles that desperately need to be fought on their behalf.

There will be more SHARK news "very disturbing news" in the area of bullfighting within a few days, and perhaps by then we will already have developments in the Hilary Duff campaign. There is also rodeo news that will be coming. For now, please let Hilary Duff's publicist hear from you. Please forward any response you might receive to us at sharkintl@sharkonline.org.

On May 6, I will be speaking at the "Animal Acres Country Hoedown Event" in Acton, California (just 45 minutes from Los Angeles). Other presenters include:

Warning: The following are a series of graphic bullfighting pictures to show the horrifying torture and excruciating slow death innocent bulls are subjected too under the guise of "culture" and "entertainment."

Baby Bull

A so-called "fighting bull" is by nature a calm and peaceful animal.

Injured Bull 2

At the beginning of the event, a thug on horseback repeatedly slams a spear into the bull to rip up muscles and cause immense blood loss to weaken him. This is not meant to be a fight after all, but instead a ritualistic slaughter for the entertainment of drunks, sadists and other deranged people.

Injured Bull 4

With the victim weakened significantly, the thugs on foot are ready to "perform." They slam short, brightly colored harpoons into the bull, causing even more injury and blood loss.

Downed Bull

The bull finally goes down, but is obviously still painfully alive.

Bull Being Killed

Like the lowdown coward he is, a thug sneaks up behind the bull to stab him in the neck. The stabbing paralyzes, but does not kill the bull.

Dead Bull Being Dragged

The bull is dragged away, usually still alive, like garbage -- a supposed triumph of man over beast. In fact, "bullfighting" and its cousin the rodeo, is nothing but a display of cowardice by the immoral and insecure.
