NIPSA Board Member's Work for National Teen Safe Driving Week

The Conor Lynch Foundation 501 (c)(3) non profit, was founded by NIPSA board member, Jeri Dye Lynch in honor of her son Conor Lynch (age 16) , who on October 19, 2010, while training with his high school cross country team, was killed by a distracted, unlicensed, hit-and-run driver (age 18). Ironically, this tragedy occurred during National Teen Safe Driving Week.

The Conor Lynch Foundation's mission is to support new and existing programs that raise awareness and promote the safety of runners, pedestrians, cyclists and young drivers. Each year during National Teen Safe Driving Week the foundation hosts a 5K Run Walk In Honor of Conor with the 4th Annual 2014 event being held on October 26. In addition to the Run/Walk there is a resource fair that provides information and education to help raise awareness on the dangers of distracted driving. Throughout the year the foundation participates in many other grassroots events spreading the message and raising awareness. Conor's Story, which can be found on Youtube is used in school assemblies across the nation to show young drivers the impact of driving distracted.

Brookings Institution Reports Nevada Families Need Private Schools to Properly Educate Students

A recent study by The Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program and UNLV-based Brookings
Mountain West entitled, "Cracking the Code on STEM: A People Strategy for Nevada's Economy," proposes that the only way students will graduate with the high-tech skills needed in today's job society, is to be educated in Nevada's private schools.  The study said that Nevada's public school districts have failed to graduate an acceptable number of students who have even basic academic proficiencies, let alone advanced math and science skills.  The report warns of a shortage of workers with high-tech skills, which is greatly limiting Nevada's ability to attract high-tech companies - and the high-paying jobs they create.

The report went on to say that private and charter schools have the flexibility to make educational decisions, in their salary scales and in their choice of individuals they hire.  They proposed that the state should allow state scholarships, state offered vouchers, education savings accounts and tax-credit scholarships so that families can afford the type of education from the private school system that they need to be competitive in today's society.

They were also excited to have guest speaker, Dr. Shaykhian, from NASA who visited with their students for two days! Dr. Shaykhian conducted science experiments, and taught students to create innovative projects that replicate what engineers create at NASA. The students made Mars Rovers, robotic arms, hovercrafts, and egg drop devices.
