Guess Who Davened Last Shabbos...
"The mind is for doing and being. Computers are machines, and idle machines are wasted. That is not true of your mind. Your mind might be wholly quiet, doing ("computing") nothing; yet you might be feeling miserable or exalted, or awestruck by the beauty of the object in front of you, or inspired or resolute-and such moments might be the center of your mental life."
The above a quote from Yale professor David Gelernter, a computer scientist, in emphasizing one of the principal differences between robotic and human life. How often are we only "doing," and not connecting with our experiences in a meaningful way by being present instead of planning, formulating, or organizing for the future?
It's definitely a struggle to stay present with all the assignments that have to be submitted, the responsibilities that we have to friends, family, and the ruminations of the past and the worries of the future.
This past Shabbos however, I felt completely anchored to the present--I didn't want to miss any of the Chazzanut of Eli Goldman! Eli's bold, penetrating chazzanut voice infused my davening with emotion, enthusiasm, and force. Yet, his rhythmic tunes and notes possessed a soft, mesmerizing character and filled my heart with warm embrace.
Let us use our inspirational experiences to motivate and challenge ourselves to never stop our climb for spiritual transcendence!
Thank you Eli Goldman, for enchanting our Shabbos experience. Hope to see you & hear you more often.
