What is the perfect diet for everyone?

Vegan? Paleo? South Beach? Atkins?
I hate to say it, but there is NO "perfect" diet for everyone.  Yes, there are principles that we need to apply for optimum health;  these are the principles we have been covering in my blog series on Staying Youthful Longer.  But as far as a "diet" in the sense that most people think about, there is not a single answer for everyone.  Perhaps, the best answer is that it depends on the metabolic type of each person.  For example, some people can handle more meat and protein in their diets (like those with Type O blood).  Others can handle more grains without gaining excessive weight.  It all depends.  Just as each individual has a unique fingerprint and genetic coding, each person has a unique metabolic type as well. 

As a general rule, the principles that I have laid out in my current blog series will yield optimum health for everyone: whole, natural foods in the original state G-d created them,  adequate water intake, a healthy balance of acid vs. alkaline foods, a proper ratio of raw vs. cooked foods, etc.  And, diet is not the only predictor for health; overall lifestyle is also important:
  • activity/ exercise
  • stress management
  • environment/ exposure to toxins
  • etc.

Yucatecan Ceviche Recipe

Yucatecan Ceviche Recipe

My husband and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in the Yucatan peninsula where we have eaten fresh fish every day, prepared in a fresh new way each time.  Sometimes it is in a sauce of garlic and spicy dried chiles (pescado al ajillo), fried (yes, on vacation we have indulged in this less than healthy option!), fried (a la plancha), and "cooked" in lime juice (ceviche).  The acids from the lime create a chemical reaction that "cooks" the fish, then chopped cilantro, tomato, and onion are added for extra flavor-- delicioso!  Click here to learn more about the chemical "cooking" process that takes place, then try it at home for yourself:

Mix and refrigerate overnight or all day long:
1 pound of fresh fish, uncooked
8 limes, juiced

Add and mix:
2 tomatoes, finely chopped
1 yellow onion, finely chopped
1 1/2 T. olive oil
1/8 c. fresh cilantro
black pepper to taste

Serve with chips, avocado, and salsa
