This Month at Setnor

April at Setnor marks the peak of our concert and recital season, with events happening almost every day.In fact, there are so many things happening this month that the College of Visual and Performing Arts is presenting a dedicated campaign called Arts in April, a month-long celebration of the many diverse talents within the college.

Many of the concerts that we are hosting this month are student recitals. Student recitals are an incredibly important part of what we present, as it is truly a celebration of all the hard work that our students have put into their studies here at Setnor.Be sure to show them your support, and if you are unable to attend in person, you can check out our newly upgraded live concert stream here: http://vpa.syr.edu/music/live-performances.

Last month, we hosted the annual Concerto and Aria Concert Competition, and are thrilled to announce this year's winners.Congratulations to baritone vocalist Angky Budiardjono, violinist Shelby Dems, and pianist Patricia Min. Also, we would like to extend an honorable mention to cellist Dylan Beckerman. The Concerto and Aria Competition provides an opportunity to showcase our finest student performers appearing as soloists with the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra. This year, we will also welcome special guest conductor Dr. Genevieve LeClair.Mark your calendars, the Concerto and Aria Competition winner's concert will be on Sunday, April 26 at 5:00 in Setnor Auditorium.

Alumni News

David Carpenter BM '13 (Saxophone Performance) is currently enrolled at the Duke School of Medicine. He has interests in both translational research and clinical medicine, particularly within the field of otolaryngology. In the future, David hopes to perform cochlear implantation surgeries and improve upon our current capabilities for restoring hearing loss. In the rare event that he is not reading a medical textbook or listening to someone's lung sounds, he also enjoys exercising, cooking, reading theology, and, of course, practicing saxophone.

Faculty/Staff Feature

James S. Abbott, Professor of Practice in Sound Recording Technology, joined Setnor's faculty in 1996 to teach audio engineering in the Music Industry program. Under his leadership, Setnor's audio curriculum, recording technology, and facilities have grown extensively, and he is especially proud that this fall, Setnor's Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology Program will welcome it's inaugural class to Syracuse.

In addition to his work at Setnor, James maintains an active schedule as a recording, editing and mastering engineer. Recently he produced and engineered a CD with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis for the record label Naxos . In progress is a major project with the Syracuse Society for New Music and record label Innova.

This summer, he will direct the 5th year of the Music Technology Access Project, an initiative for people with disabilities, to teach professional recording skills, develop methods for educators, and adapt technology to have universal accessibility.
