This Month at Setnor

December is a month of traditions. Setnor traditions include our 4th annual reception for alumni and friends at the NYSSMA Winter Conference and the annual celebration of the season with Holidays at Hendricks.

For the reception at NYSSMA, please join us at 8:00 on Friday, December 5, in the Riverview Lounge of the Radisson Rochester Riverside. Come to meet faculty and students and renew old friendships. Holidays at Hendricks will take place on Sunday, December 7, at 7:30. All six of our choirs and University Organist Dr. Anne Laver will perform this year. Please also note that the Chimemasters will be ringing the Crouse College Chimes before and after the concert.

However, before we close the year with Holidays at Hendricks, join us on campus in Setnor Auditorium and Shemin Auditorium, and downtown at Orange Note @ The Warehouse to fight off the cold of December with hot jazz! Windjammer Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform at 8:00 on December 3 in Setnor Auditorium. VPA Dean's Advisory Council member Peter Maciulewicz and Setnor faculty member Jeff Stockham will perform in a professional jazz quintet called The Upstate Burners in our newest venue called Orange Note @ The Warehouse at 8:00 on Friday, December 5. The Jazz-Funk Combo will perform at 4:00 on December 6 in Shemin Auditorium of the Shaffer Art Building.

Finally, in this season of thanks, we recognize our donors who do so much for our students. Thank you to all who gave to Setnor during the past year! In particular, please keep our All-Steinway School Campaign in mind as you consider your end-of-year philanthropy. We were fortunate to receive outright funding for some new grand pianos from Jennie Berkson and David Edelstein for a Model D Concert Grand piano, Barbara and Harold Jones for a Model D Concert Grand piano, and Marylyn Ginsberg-Klaus for our newest piano, a Model B grand piano. Thank you!

Alumni News

George Katehis B.M. '13 (Composition) is currently pursuing a master's degree in Composition at Manhattan School of Music; is in his second and final year of study with Reiko Fueting. This past summer, George attended a creative musician's retreat in New Hampshire as well the Zodiac Music Academy and Festival in France and the HighScore Festival Italy. At all of these events, there were world premieres of three of George's new pieces. George currently has several pieces in the works (concerto for guitar and chamber ensemble, preludes for the classical guitar students at Setnor, and an organ solo for Setnor alum Alex Meszler), several commissions, and an orchestral thesis for the symphony orchestra at the Manhattan School of Music. He also works as a freelance engraver.

Faculty Feature

Liz Carioti B.S. '11 (Recording and Allied Entertainment Industries) started as the new instructor of MUI 320 Marshall Street Records in Fall of 2014. Founded by Professor of Practice David Rezak, Marshall Street Records is one of Syracuse University's two student-operated record labels. Both labels provide students with hands-on learning experiences in integral aspects of running a label such as producing and releasing music, promoting artists and live events, and marketing merchandise both on and off campus. Carioti is also the Box Office Manager at the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse where she acts as a liaison between show promoters and the Oncenter in order to ensure that events are built into Ticketmaster's software and able to be purchased by patrons. Prior to the Oncenter, Liz was the Box Office Manager at the Landmark Theatre.

Student Spotlight

Anthony Veiga B.M. '15 (Music Education with Performance Honors) is one of the three drum majors for the Syracuse University Marching Band. He is also one of two Directors for the basketball pep band, the Sour Sitrus Society. This season, Anthony hopes to keep adding some exciting music to the repertoire and continue to expand the game day traditions for the crowd making the Carrier Dome one of the most fan oriented stadiums in all of college basketball. Anthony will also be serving the Eta Phi chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi this year as Vice President of Service. He plans to make chapter more involved in the community. The brothers of Phi Mu Alpha have a long tradition of service on the Syracuse University Campus and Anthony is hoping to make even more of an impact within the Syracuse community and its neighboring suburbs.
