This Month at Setnor

November finds Setnor in full concert mode with concerts almost every night of the week. We will also have some special events. Bernard Struber from our sister institution, the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, will be in residence for a week. Mr. Struber is an organist and a jazz guitarist with a professional ensemble called Struber z'tett. He will appear as a guest artist on jazz guitar with the  Morton Schiff Jazz Ensemble in Shemin Auditorium on November 14 at 7:00 and as a  solo organist in Setnor Auditorium on November 15 at 5:00.

Flute instructors Kelly Covert and Dana DiGennaro will be leading our first annual Flute Day on Saturday, November 15. Rebecca Gilbert, principal flutist with the Rochester Philharmonic, will perform a recital and masterclass. The day will also include a flute choir reading session, yoga class for flutists, and a special mock audition opportunity for area High School flutists auditioning for all-county the following weekend. All interested flutists are invited to attend. More information and a full schedule are available here.

And if you didn't catch the two features of our new Steinway Model D pianos broadcast on ESPN last month, you can see the first feature here  and the re-tease here .

Alumni News

Since leaving the School of Music with his masters degree MM '84 (Saxophone Performance) Bill Fredrickson has taught in the Oswego City Schools, at Syracuse University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and is now Associate Dean for Operations and Professor of Music Education in the College of Music at Florida State University.  His many fond memories of days at Setnor include lessons with Ron Caravan, classes with Cornelia Yarbrough and George Pappastavrou, wind ensemble rehearsals (and marching band trips) with Bob Spradling, and just being in and around Crouse College itself. His career interests in teaching and performing music were nurtured by many interesting and exciting people on the beautiful hill overlooking the City of Syracuse. More info about Dr. Frederickson can be found at http://www.music.fsu.edu/Faculty-and-Staff/Administration/William-Fredrickson

Faculty Feature

David Wilber joined Setnor's faculty last semester as a supervisor of instrumental music student teachers and became instructor of the Instrumental Rehearsal Techniques class this semester. The class encompasses many of the issues and experiences that Mr. Wilber encountered during his 34 year teaching career, including lesson planning, warm ups, score preparation, percussion, transposition, intonation, and rehearsal discipline. Students in the class are able to practice techniques learned with the "class band." He also hopes to bring students to an area school to observe and work with students in a public school setting. This will provide them with a real life laboratory experience and help them to better prepare for their upcoming student teaching assignment. Mr. Wilber also remains active as Secretary of the Onondaga County Music Educator's Association and Executive Director of the New York State Band Director's Association

Student Spotlight

Alex Shenkman MM '15 (Composition) spent the summer as a Studio Intern with Jingle Punks LA, where he worked on recording for up and coming rapper Lil' Dicky and Tyra Banks, as well as filming for a new Meow Mix campaign. With Newhouse Graduate Student Jim Tuttle, Alex has scored two promotional videos, one of which is currently featured on the Alexia Foundation website. This year, he will be scoring the TRF Capstone Television Production Class's original mini-series "Truth or Dare," an independent student film, and a professional promotional video by Jess Suarez. This short film is part of a larger initiative to engage the community in decreasing drug dependent newborns in Onondaga County. As part of his recital on March 28th at 5:00, he will be re-scoring a short scene from "The Last Castle", originally scored by Jerry Goldsmith. Alex is also the music director of Orange Appeal.
