This Month at Setnor

October at Setnor begins and ends with family! We welcome our alumni family to campus for Orange Central with a special  Steinway piano concert on October 10 and close the month with Family Weekend 'sample' concerts by instrumental and choral ensembles.

The concert on October 10 is called Steinway and Setnor - A Great Combination. This concert, which will feature students and faculty performers, will be the first time that both of our new Steinway Model D Concert Grand Pianos will be played in concert! This concert will give us an opportunity to showcase our marvelous pianists on our new world-class instruments and show our appreciation for the generosity of donors to our All-Steinway School Campaign. Please consider contributing to this worthy cause as we replace all 67 pianos in Setnor to provide the finest instruments for our students and seek the prestigious designation of an All-Steinway School

We will also welcome outstanding guest artists to campus in October including Amanda Mole, this year's Arthur Poister Competition Winner, performing an organ concert on October 1 and Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombonist with the New York Philharmonic, playing the famous trombone solo "The Blue Bells of Scotland" with the Marching Band at the Syracuse vs. Florida State game on October 11. Rebecca Rottsolk, will conduct the Women's Choir Festival on October 25, and Anthony Maiello, will conduct an open rehearsal with the Wind Ensemble on October 28 and on their October 30 concert.

Alumni News

He has also joined the Syracuse University Northern New Jersey Alumni Club as a Web Manager. Rob has continued performing with a local Christian Rock band on drums during weekend worship, and in Centenary Stage affiliated productions as Assistant Sound Board Operator. His photographs have been seen in the New Jersey newspaper The Warren Reporter since January 2014.

Faculty Feature

Annie Laver has joined the Setnor School faculty this year as Assistant Professor of Organ and University Organist. She comes to us from Rochester, NY, where she has been instructor of Healthy Keyboard Technique and Organ Repertoire, and Coordinator of Organ Outreach Programs at the Eastman School of Music for the last three years. Dr. Laver performs frequently in the U. S. and Europe, and has been a featured recitalist and clinician at regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society. This Fall she is enjoying working with Baroque Chamber Ensemble, Hendricks Chapel Choir, and a fantastic studio of student organists. Dr. Laver will also teach a Service Playing course (AMC500-004) in the spring designed for students with keyboard proficiency who would like to learn more about the organ, leading hymns, improvisation, and how to be successful in a job as a church musician.

Student Spotlight

Angky Budiardjono MM '15 (Vocal Performance) spent four weeks this summer training and performing intensively at OperaWorks' Advanced Artist Program. OperaWorks is a nationally acclaimed summer training program in Northridge, California where students encounter a holistic approach to operatic training. Through the Baker Artist Program, Angky was able to meet Ann Baltz during her three-day residency in fall 2013, and was later accepted to participate in OperaWorks during summer 2014. There, he took acting classes, improvisation classes, vocal coachings, as well as audition technique classes and career/social media planning and networking. He also performed in aria marathons as well as an improv opera, which featured thirty-two singers from around the world. Angky was recently a part of the Syracuse Change a Life campaign and also sang the Syracuse Alma Mater with the SU Marching Band during the New Student Convocation. He can be seen in the Syracuse Opera Chorus later this month in a production of Strauss' Die Fledermaus. Learn more about Angky at http://changealife.syr.edu/angky/.
