Applied Music and Performance

This Month at Setnor

Classes have ended and juries and final examinations are in full swing! There are still a few student recitals and a performance of opera scenes. Commencement is just around the corner and the faculty and students will soon spread throughout the country and around the globe for performances, summer workshops, and some much needed rest. Upcoming summer activities on campus will include a special concert on June 3 to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Crouse Chimes. They will be rung at 6:00 PM. Please bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a beautiful summer evening in Syracuse! The 2nd Annual Girls Leadership Academy for Music will be held July 6-11. This unique program is for girls aged 15-18 interested in honing their music leadership skills. Please encourage any young women you think would be interested to apply for this program. The annual Summer Festival Orchestra will rehearse July 21, 23, 28, 30 and August 3 with a concert on Monday, August 4. Repertoire this year will include Copland's "Appalachian Spring," Gershwin's "An American in Paris," and John Williams Epics. To join the orchestra or for more information, contact Dr. James Tapia at jrtapia@syr.edu.

Finally, our first new pianos of the All-Steinway School Campaign are arriving. A Boston Upright piano arrived in April and a new Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano will be moved into Setnor Auditorium in May! Information about the campaign and opportunities to participate are available at http://vpa.syr.edu/setnorsteinway.

Alumni News

Christopher Jabot BM '12, MM'13 (Music Education) recently became the instrumental music instructor at Solvay Middle School where he teaches all lessons, concert bands, jazz ensembles, and chamber groups. He also serves on the faculty at the Syracuse University Setnor School of Music as a saxophone instructor. In addition to his active teaching career, Christopher performs throughout the Syracuse area as a classical saxophonist. He can be heard on bass and baritone saxophone on the soon to be released Syracuse University Saxophone Ensemble recording of Walter Hartley's works for saxophone ensemble.

Faculty Feature

Dr. John F. Warren is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the Syracuse University Setnor School of Music, where he conducts choirs and teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, choral literature, and rehearsal techniques. His conducting activities this semester included being a guest artist at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, conducting the University Singers at the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference in Baltimore, where they were one of only eight college choirs to perform, and preparing the Syracuse University Oratorio Society and the University Singers to perform Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Central New York's professional orchestra, Symphoria, conducted by Gerard Schwarz. He also conducted the University Singers at the inauguration of Syracuse University's 12th Chancellor and President, Kent Syverud. In addition to his conducting duties, Dr. Warren hosted Maestra Catherine Bolzinger, choral conductor at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, for a weeklong residence in April and wrote a series of three articles on contemporary Cuban choral composers and Mexican choral music for the International Choral Bulletin.

Student Spotlight

Rob Righthand and Athena Margarites, both BM '14 (Music and Entertainment Industries), traveled to Japan this past January with Assistant Professor Bill DiCosimo and the Groupo Pagān Trio. There they had the opportunity to perform, record, and work with the administration and students of the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. In response to their visit, 19 students and 3 administrators came to Setnor to perform in the 15th Annual Prism Concert, for which Athena and Rob were the co-producers. This growing exchange program will create unique opportunities for students of both Setnor and the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.
