This Month at Setnor

March is an exciting month at Setnor! Along with our busy array of wonderful concerts and recitals, students will have unique learning opportunities in Brazil, New York City, and on campus. Professors Elisa Dekaney and Joshua Dekaney will be taking a group of students to Brazil March 7-15 for the class The Culture and Art of Brazil. This course combines on-campus classes with a 10-day trip to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, the coastal colonial city of Paraty, the Orquestra da Grota - a music school on the outskirts of a shanty town in Niterói and other inclusive educational settings.

Michelle Taylor, Setnor's Assistant Director for Operations, will lead the inaugural Gilbert Week March 9-15. It is a week-long immersion program in New York City where students will visit performing arts institutions - including Carnegie Hall, the League of American Orchestras, Lincoln Center Theater, the Metropolitan Opera, Orchestra of St Luke's, Steinway & Sons, and more. They will meet professionals and learn about the wide variety of career opportunities in music. We are grateful to Dennis and Nancy Gilbert (Dennis - BM '73 Music Education and Nancy -

BS '74 Education and English) for creating this new opportunity!

SU will be a stop on this year's American Whistleblower Tour  during the fourth week of March. The week-long activities will include a special performance by the Contemporary Music Ensemble on March 27.

Finally, March will end with a master class and performance by our final Baker Artist of the year, acclaimed heldentenor Jon Frederic West. His public performance will be in Setnor Auditorium on March 30. Thank you to the Dexter F. & Dorothy H. Baker Foundation (Dorothy Hess Baker, BM '49 and Ellen Baker Ghelardi, BS '73 Drama) for creating the Baker Artist Program!

Setnor in the City

Join us on Monday, March 10, for a "Setnor in the City" reception at SU's Lubin House from 6:00-8:00 to celebrate the inaugural Gilbert Week: NYC Seminar for Music Professions. The reception will provide an opportunity to meet current students, alumni, faculty members, and the professionals from the New York institutions who have volunteered their time and expertise for Gilbert week. RSVP by clicking here.

Save the Date

On March 24, Syracuse University will celebrate its 144th birthday! Because "44" is such a significant part of SU history, we'll honor that tradition with a huge birthday bash on National Orange Day. On National Orange Day, we'll ask students and alumni to help preserve the tradition of the Crouse Chimes, which will turn 125 this June. Get involved with the effort by visiting CelebrateSU.syr.edu and follow along with the conversation on social media using the hashtag #CelebrateSU.

Alumni News

Michael Hernandez MM '06 (Music Performance) is a freelance saxophonist and serves on the faculty of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. After graduation, Michael moved to Florida to work on his doctorate and formed the Mana Quartet. The group became the first saxophone quartet to win the grand prize at the International Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. In addition to performing concerts throughout Europe, Canada and the US, Mana has been invited to hold residencies at several orchestral festivals including the Hot Springs Music Festival. Hernandez is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Mana Saxophone Orchestra AZ and is a board member of Classical Revolution Phoenix. Hernandez frequently tours Universities and Music Festivals where is asked to speak about Music Business and Entrepreneurship and acts as a freelance artist consultant and artist representative, helping young performers start their own career. More information about Michael is available at http://www.michaelhernandezsax.com.

Faculty Feature

Muriel Bodley is in her fourth year on Setnor's faculty as Instructor of Music Education. She teaches string methods to all music education students and string pedagogy to string majors. Additionally, she observes music education students in their student teaching assignments. Constantly in demand outside of her responsibilities at Setnor, Muriel has been working hard at Christian Brothers Academy and LeMoyne College. Her very young Christian Brothers Academy orchestra will again go to the NYSSMA Majors Competition Festival in April.  Muriel looks forward to adjudicating at the NYSSMA solo festival this spring and has started to work on the LeMoyne College String Day Camp, which will take place in late July.

Student Spotlight

Marco Giusto MM '15 (Composition), anticipates up-coming performances of several of his pieces. His "Little Requiem For The Lost Things," a memorial to journalist Helen Thomas, will be performed by the Contemporary Music Ensemble in Setnor Auditorium on March 27 as part of the American Whistleblower Tour . The piece is for four voices and a small ensemble. Additionally, Marco is nearing completion of a cello suite to be performed by Setnor student Lydia Parkington on her April 19th recital. He is also working on a piece for nine percussionists and celesta and a violin concerto. The biggest factor in Marco's decision to attend Setnor was the composition faculty. He has found his major professor and advisor to respectively be stimulating and helpful and has been struck by the generosity of the School.
