Applied Music and Performance

This Month at Setnor

February will be an exciting month for Setnor as the SU Marching Band performs the pregame show at Super Bowl XLVIII, the University Singers perform at the Eastern Division conference of the American Choral Directors Association, Dr. John Warren conducts choirs and master classes at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, and a contingent from Japan's Senzoku Gakuen College of Music spends a week at Setnor.

The SUMB will perform a NY/NJ show along with the Rutgers University Marching Band for the Super Bowl pregame on February 2. The following week, the University Singers will go on tour culminating in performances at the ACDA Eastern Division conference on February 6.

Dr. John Warren will spend a week at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg as part of our faculty exchange program. Their choral director, Catherine Bolzinger, will visit Setnor for a week in April and her professional choir, Voix de Strass, will perform on April 16. Finally, a group of 24 students plus faculty from the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music will spend a week at Setnor as part of a new exchange program for Music Industry students. The Japanese students will attend classes and workshops and perform on our Prism concert on February 27. Students Athena Margarites and Rob Righthand accompanied faculty members Bill DiCosimo and Joshua Dekaney to Japan in January for a week as part of this evolving exchange program.

Save the Date

Please save the date to join us for a "Setnor in the City" reception at SU's Lubin House from 6:00-8:00 on Monday, March 10, to celebrate the inaugural Gilbert Week: NYC Seminar for Music Professions. The Gilbert Week is a new weeklong immersion program in New York City where students will visit performing arts institutions - including Carnegie Hall, the League of American Orchestras, Lincoln Center Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, Orchestra of St Luke's, Steinway & Sons, and more. They will meet professionals and learn about the wide variety of career opportunities in music. Please join us to welcome these wonderful students and meet other alumni, some of our faculty members, and the professionals hosting them for the week.

Alumni News

Chris Lieber BM '07 (Music Industry) has held a number of prestigious positions since his graduation from Setnor, and his subsequent study at Hofstra Law School, at which he focused on entertainment law. He began his career as an entertainment attorney at MasurLaw, a boutique entertainment firm in New York City. He went on to work at Creative Artists Agency, also in New York City. Remaining in New York, Chris now is with Starpower, where he represents brands for the company's celebrity endorsements and engages in entertainment marketing strategies. Chris looks forward to several successful marketing campaigns in 2014 as he continues to develop brands. He was active as a bassoonist and pianist while at Setnor. His sister, Elizabeth, will begin her studies at Syracuse University in Fall 2014, also in VPA, as a Communication and Rhetorical Studies major.

Faculty Feature

Dr. Joseph Downing is a member of the composition and theory faculty, but most students will know him as "the ear training guy."  He stresses basic musicianship skills that give students the flexibility to be successful in today's changing world and demonstrates those skills himself.  In Syracuse, he has done such diverse things as conduct an unfamiliar opera for Syracuse Opera with five days notice, perform with the former Syracuse Symphony on piano, harpsichord, organ and celeste, and sing as a section leader at the Episcopal Cathedral.  This semester he will take on new responsibilities as Chorus Master for Syracuse Opera's performance of Porgy and Bess.  Dr. Downing also continues as Music Director at Plymouth Congregational Church in downtown Syracuse where he leads the choir, plays the organ and works with five student interns from the Setnor School of Music in a varied program that includes jazz, popular music, ethnic music, and classical music.

Student Spotlight

Violinist Carolyn Goldstein BM '16 (Performance) is also pursuing a major in Music History and Cultures. She is very grateful for the opportunity to study abroad and for the support of the faculty and her peers at Setnor. She is spending the semester in France with Setnor's Strasbourg program where she takes classes at the SU Center and the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. This past semester her string quartet had the opportunity to play in a master class for the Villiers Quartet of London, which was a thrilling experience for her since her career goal is to be a member of a traveling string quartet. She hopes to intern at a luthier shop for her Capstone Project in the Renée Crown Honors Program. She has been accepted at two internationally prestigious summer chamber music festivals for 2014: one in Europe and one in the USA. She looks forward to making chamber music this summer and returning to Setnor in the fall.
