This Month at Setnor

Seasons Greetings from the Setnor School of Music! Please join us on Sunday, December 8, for two memorable SU traditions. The Chimemasters Holiday Concert will be from 6:45-7:15 PM. Join us on the ground of Crouse College to hear some of your favorite seasonal songs played on Crouse College's iconic chimes. You can even sit in your car with the windows open if it is too cold! Then, relocate to Hendricks Chapel for "Holidays at Hendricks" beginning at 7:30. This year's program will include the Hendricks Chapel Choir, University Singers, Windjammer Vocal Jazz Ensemble, SU Brass Ensemble, Organist Kola Owolabi and a handbell choir consisting of Setnor students and members of the Plymouth Congregational Church. You will be sure to leave campus in the holiday spirit, SU style!

Save the Date

We will hold our third annual alumni reception during the NYSSMA Winter Conference on Friday, December 6, at 8:30 PM. The reception will be in the Riverside Lounge at the Radisson Rochester Riverside Hotel. All Setnor alumni, from all class years and majors, are invited to join us in order to catch up with what is happening at Setnor, reconnect with friends, and network with our impressive group of alumni. You won't want to miss it, so please mark your calendar now and join us on December 6!

All-Steinway School Initiative

We launched a $2.5 million drive on November 6 to replace all 67 pianos in the school and make Setnor an All-Steinway School. It will take gifts of all sizes from many donors in order for us to accomplish this goal. Please read about the initiative at http://vpa.syr.edu/setnorsteinway. If you prefer to give online, please visit givetovpa.syr.edu and write that your gift is for the All-Steinway Initiative in the "if other please specify" box.

Alumni News

Chris Cresswell BM '11 (Composition) recently returned to Setnor for an alumni recital that included the world premiere of his piece Stone Seeking Warmth - a 25-minute work for tenor and chamber orchestra. Commissioned by the American Composers Forum though a Jerome Foundation Grant, the piece was performed by assistant professor Jonathan English in collaboration with James Tapia and members of the SU Symphony Orchestra. The concert also featured Cresswell's On the Verge - an electronics-only version of Fabric of a World Unfolding, Letters to You, The Kiss, and The Ruby Stone. While in Syracuse, he spoke with SU composition students at a public lecture and with students at Cazenovia High School. On the horizon is a month-long Cresswell's residency as a 2014 artist-in-residence at Willapa Bay AiR in Oysterville, WA. On the Verge is newly available for purchase at grizwaldmusic.bandcamp.com.

Faculty Feature

An Oswego native, Patrick MacDougall worked as a recording engineer in Los Angeles for 27 years before returning to Central New York as a Recording Engineer and instructor in the Setnor School of Music. MacDougall has been an integral part of many recent projects, such as being the sole engineer responsible for recording, editing and mixing the music of local band, Hobo Graffiti. He has also been recording and editing performances for an album with singer Benny Mardones. MacDougall also does dialogue replacement on two television series, Hostages and Haven, where he records actor's dialogue and matches it to the screen motion. Involvement with the CollegeBand project (www.collegeband.com) has been another of MacDougall's recent interests. He works with founder Reed Seerman to restore and enhance recordings of bands signed before the age of digital recording. He makes edits if needed, and implements noise reduction, equalization, and compression. CollegeBand has allowed for connections of artists and colleges with their musical legacies.

Student Spotlight

Music Education graduate student, Christine Krumbach (BM '13 Music Education), is grateful for the opportunity to serve as assistant conductor for Concert Choir this academic year. She feels that this is an experience unique to Setnor; it has been an important aspect in her development as a teacher, practicing her teaching and rehearsal techniques, and receiving mentorship from director Dr. Elisa Dekaney. A thrill in working with the ensemble this past semester came with a visit from Dr. André Thomas, of Florida State University, who delivered a conducting master class with Christine. She is eager to travel to Brazil in March as part of a Setnor spring break experience. Christine is preparing a lecture recital for the spring, focusing on choral repertoire encompassing a four-year high school curriculum. She looks forward to getting out in the field and having her own classroom, be it a choral, general, or instrumental setting.
