Applied Music and Performance

This Month at Setnor

We will celebrate the legacy of Rose and Jules R. Setnor with a special concert on November 6 at 8:00 PM. The performance will feature faculty members and students playing on the world famous Holtkamp Organ and Steinway concert grand pianos in our majestic Setnor Auditorium. Selections will include classical piano works by Albeniz, Chopin, Kapustin, and Rachmaninoff, a piano duo performing Gershwin's Short Story, a jazz piece by Central New York's own Rick Mantalbano, and Syracuse's popular piano quartet Forty Fingers performing Gounod's Waltz from"Faust."

To carry on the Setnors' commitment to musical excellence, we will also kick off an initiative to become an All-Steinway School-an effort to provide the best piano equipment possible for the study of music. More information and parking directions are available at vpa.syr.edu/setnorlegacy. Please join us!

Alumni News

Thomas Lerew MM '13 (Choral Conducting) is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Arizona where he serves as associate conductor of the University Singers.  Tom studied choral conducting at Setnor and served as the assistant conductor of the Syracuse University Singers and Hendricks Chapel Choir in addition to duties with the choral area.  Tom was awarded the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Music Education with a concentration in piano from Houghton College in 2008, and prior to his time at Syracuse, taught music in public high schools in New York and Pennsylvania.  Tom valued the close interactions with faculty members that his Setnor experience provided.  He said "there was a clear drive for artistic excellence among the conducting faculty" and that "their careful mentoring meant a lot to me."

Faculty Feature

The Setnor School of Music welcomes Dr. Juliet Hess as a new faculty member in the Department of Music Education. She recently completed her doctorate in Sociology of Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Her dissertation focused on the work of four elementary music educators who challenged dominant paradigms with their work. She continually looks for ways to do education differently with a particular emphasis on ethics. She is currently working on a philosophical paper that draws on her doctoral case study to explore the paradoxes and casualties of critical pedagogy. Future aspirations for the year include connections of music education to critical disability studies and an exploration on superficial engagement with multicultural music education.

Student Spotlight

Tevi Eber MM '14 (Composition) has been working steadily on a number of compositions for solo instruments and various ensembles, which will culminate in a performance of the pieces at his graduate recital on April 13, 2014. He has also been busy working on two original musicals. This past summer, Tevi recorded an album featuring some of his original songs. He wrote, arranged, played all keyboards and sang all of the songs on the record. The album was recorded with members of the Miami Sound Machine and will be released later this year on the Wild Cherry Tree label. After graduation in May, Tevi plans to move to New York City and continue working as a composer and performer. He anticipates many exciting potential events showcasing his music in 2014, including a reading of his song cycle-musical theater work, tentatively titled "Conversations," and premieres of his new classical compositions.
