Alumni News

Anqi Jiang BS '13 (Recording and Allied Entertainment Industries) spent the last four years embracing the global nature of today's music business. While a student at Syracuse University, Anqi completed a variety of internships on three continents including placements in China at Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Converse Shanghai and Qingdao Universal, Big Machine Agency in London, and Interscope Records in Los Angeles. After graduating and receiving job offers from companies on all three of the continents on which she had interned, she accepted a position as China Social Media Coordinator for Scooter Braun Projects in Los Angeles.  Anqi joins fellow Bandier alumni Olivia Zaro BS '12 and Michael George BS '11 at SB Projects, a multi-facetted company that includes artist management, a record label, music publishing company and a film division.  She will have opportunities to work with artists that include Justin Bieber, Psy, The Wanted, and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Faculty Feature

Composer Dr. Stephen Ferre is preparing for performances of two of his works. He is arranging Paradisio for a Society for New Music concert at the Everson Museum on January 26, 2014, and his saxophone concerto, From Her Husband's Hand, will be performed by faculty member Ronald Caravan and the SU Symphony Orchestra in February. A piano concerto, Chaos, is also in the works. Dr. Ferre directs Setnor's Contemporary Music Ensemble, from which he has drawn a small group of performers to work within an improvisational framework. An evening of directed improvisation, with these performers will ensue, entitled Night Visions. When not teaching, Dr. Ferre runs a music engraving and publishing company called Notagraphia LLC (www.notagraphia.com), through which he also arranges works, mostly by the Danish composer Per Nørgård, for Edition Wilhelm Hansen, Copenhagen. His orchestration of Helle Nacht (Violin Concerto No. 1) has been recorded on BIS (BIS-CD-1872).

Student Spotlight

Mario Pietra BA '14 is finishing an album called "Remote Narration" with his ensemble, The Pietra Group. It will be released on Syracuse University Records later this semester. The record will feature original compositions by Mario and his brother Joe Pietra with Mario on bass, Joe on piano/synthesizer, and Matt Hoffmann on vibraphone, Sam Lester on guitar, and Jerad Lippi on drums. Excerpts of "Remote Narration" can be heard on The Pietra Group's website: www.thepietragroup.com.

Mario was raised in Syracuse and remembers being part of the SU culture all his life. He values the excellence of his professors and ensembles in the Setnor School of Music and the flexibility he is afforded by the BA degree program.
