Applied Music and Performance

This Month at Setnor

September is a time of rebirth and renewal on campus. The quiet days of summer are past and the halls of Crouse College are now buzzing with students and faculty conversing, rehearsing, and being the engaging community that is the Setnor School of Music! We welcomed our largest class in history and three new full-time faculty members this fall. We are also starting new minors in Jazz Studies and Private Music Study this semester. And, we will unveil our new marching band uniforms on October 5 when SU takes on Clemson in our first ACC regular season game. Thank you to the many generous donors who contributed to outfitting the band!

We owe special thanks to the following three families who have helped us launch major new initiatives:

The Taishoff Family Foundation (Rob Taishoff BA '86 Policy Studies and Laurie Taishoff BS '84 Broadcast Journalism) funded our Music Technology Access Project for the second time this year. This unique program provides opportunities for music education graduate students to develop and offer a summer camp in recording technology for local special needs students.

The Dexter F. & Dorothy H. Baker Foundation (Dorothy Hess Baker, BM '49 and Ellen Baker Ghelardi, BS '73 Drama) have generously funded a scholarship for years. This year they have added a new Baker Artists Program to bring top talent to Setnor for master classes and public performances. We will welcome the inaugural group of Baker Artists this season. Ann Baltz Opera Works will be here October 2-3, the Boston Brass will join us October 31-November 2, and opera singer Jon Frederic West will be on campus in the spring semester. Please check our calendar for dates and times of performances and join us!

Dennis and Nancy Gilbert (Dennis - BM '73 Music Education and Nancy - BS '74 Education and English) have generously funded scholarships and seed funding for a variety of projects over the years. This year we will launch the Gilbert Week for Music Professions. It will be a weeklong experience for sophomores to learn about careers in music through meetings with key personnel in professional music organizations in New York City.

Save the Date

Please plan on joining us in Setnor Auditorium for a major event at 8:00 on Wednesday, November 6. We will pay tribute to Dr. Setnor with inspiring performances on organ and piano and will be announcing the launch of a major initiative for the future of the Setnor School of Music. You won't want to miss it, so please mark your calendar now and join us on November 6!

Alumni News

Diane Schaming BM '07 (Music Education) teaches K-5 general and vocal music at Shady Spring Elementary School in Baltimore County, MD. She studied African drumming and dance in Ghana in the summer of 2011. Her experiences in Ghana have led to many changes in her teaching; from the way she organizes her classroom to the way that she incorporates instruments and movement into her lessons. Most importantly, says Schaming, the way that she relates with her students has changed - especially those who come from other countries. Shady Springs Elementary is a diverse school with students representing roughly 50 different countries, including many students from West Africa. Her experiences in Ghana have broadened her cultural understanding and opened for the doors for new discourse with students about their native cultures. Diane recently planned a lesson on Nigerian dance and music with students from that country during their lunchtime. The students co-taught the lesson and it was well received by all students.

Faculty Feature

The Setnor School of Music is proud to welcome Dr. Peppie Calvar, as the Assistant Director of Choral Activities. His responsibilities include directing the Hendricks Chapel Choir and teaching freshman music theory. Dr. Calvar holds the D.M.A. degree in choral conducting from the University of South Carolina. He also studied at Georgia State University and East Carolina University. As a performer, he has appeared frequently as a baritone soloist and chorister. A recent highlight was singing for high Mass at The Vatican. He has also performed as a percussionist before the American Bandmasters Association as a member of the Olde English Wind Ensemble from Winthrop University and has collaborated on jazz recordings as a vocalist, percussionist, and pianist. Dr. Calvar has served often as a guest conductor and clinician. As a composer, has been commissioned to write for various organizations. Many of his works are published by Colla Voce Publications.

Student Spotlight

Morgan Mills, BM '15 (Music Industry) has always been surrounded by music. She remembers seeing her parents perform from as early as three years of age. Her own involvement in making music - singing and playing violin and piano, has been central to her life from a young age. Mills' decision to come to the Setnor School of Music was based on the strong music industry program and the positive atmosphere she found here. Her fervor for the School is such that she serves as a Setnor School of Music Tour Guide - a role that she values as a chance to impress prospective students and families with Setnor. Morgan is pursuing performance honors and will be working on her junior recital this year. She will also serve as Co-Chair of Service and Fundraising for Sigma Alpha Iota, which will be busy with Syracuse-area fundraisers and service projects.
