Applied Music and Performance

This Month at Setnor

August is anything but quiet in the Setnor School of Music. There are concerts, band camp, building projects, and the start of classes. Concerts include the Summer Festival Orchestra performance on August 5 and the Music Technology Access Project concert on August 10. The SU Marching Band camp begins on August 12 and concludes with the traditional 'Home to the Dome' performance at 9:00 PM on August 22.

Summer building projects include the installation of new bulletin boards, the arrival of new chairs, stands, and tables for a variety of spaces, new paint in some rooms, and new carpeting in rooms 212 and 306 and jazz suite in Shaffer Art Building. We have also received new projectors and interactive white boards that will be installed in seven classrooms during the fall semester, providing 'smart' rooms with the latest technology.

Looking ahead to September, we will offer four faculty recitals. Kola Owolabi performs on organ September 3, pianists Ida Trebicka and Amy Heyman will present a joint recital on September 10, and singers Laura Enslin and Kathleen Roland-Silverstein will present solo recitals on September 27 and 28 respectively. The full 2013-2014 season of concerts is available here. Please mark your calendar and join us for as many concerts as possible!

Alumni News

Stephen Brew M.M. '12 is a pursuing a doctorate at Indiana University, where he

will continue his studies in guitar performance on a full scholarship. He has been granted an Associate Instructor position and will teach guitar to undergraduate students in private and group settings. Through Brew's work with Syracuse non-profit Say Yes to Education, he wrote and has recently published a set of six arrangements for youth guitar ensembles. More information can be found at http://www.secondaprattica.org/. Brew attributes much of his success to his time at the Setnor School of Music. He first praises his guitar teacher, Dr. Kenneth Meyer, saying "Dr. Meyer connected with me in a way that other teachers didn't." Brew says that he helped him take his technical and interpretive skills to another level. Brew also spoke highly of his time with Drs. Godfrey and Waggoner, saying, "they discuss history and theory from a composer's perspective, which helps students grasp the inner-workings of artistic trends and landmark works."

Faculty Feature

Dr. Elisa Dekaney, Associate Professor of Music, is newly elected chair of the Music Education Department in Setnor and is chair of Ethnic and Multicultural Perspectives Repertoire and Standards for the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division. In this role, she worked on developing and designing specific interest and reading sessions at the National Conference last March in Dallas, TX. Dr. Dekaney is currently working with the ACDA Eastern Division leadership in planning the "Together We Sing" sessions for the Baltimore Conference in 2014. These sessions will be an innovative approach to the traditional reading sessions by utilizing the combined talent of auditioned choirs, audience, and lecturers. In addition, Dr. Dekaney published an arrangement of "Two Brazilian Folksongs" in collaboration with Dr. Lon Beery. The arrangement was published by Carl Fisher in 2013 and represents an effort to bring world music repertoire to the middle school level.

Student Spotlight

Junior composition majors Alex Ganes and Alex Shenkman have recently returned from studying in Strasbourg, France with internationally renowned composer Philippe Manoury. It was a transformative experience for both students. Says Ganes, "from studying with Professor Manoury, I have been introduced to many new ways of looking at composition. He opened my eyes to a more logical, mathematical approach to composing that has undoubtedly shaped my own personal music." Shenkman called the experience a rare opportunity. He valued the immersion in French culture as well as his time with Manoury. He said "experiencing a fresh vision, something I had never seen or thought of, was something I had hoped to achieve in my study abroad. My study with Manoury more than fulfilled this hope and allowed me to better understand the musical world in which we all live."
