Alumni News
Cody Forrest M.M. '12 is pursuing a doctorate at the New England Conservatory. Exciting opportunities have surfaced in Cody's first year at NEC. He was selected to participate in a master class with acclaimed composer and conductor Oliver Knussen. They reviewed Cody's piece "Savage Light-Celestial", which was composed for the Syracuse University Contemporary Music Ensemble; it proved to be an enriching experience. He also won a competition within the NEC composition department to have a piece of his played by a competitively selected honors chamber ensemble. An excerpt of his piece "Book of Prayers" (2011) was selected to be performed by the Spruce Quartet - a string quartet coached by Roger Tapping. Cody anticipates one and a half years more of coursework before embarking on his dissertation, which will take the form of a large-scale work. |

Student Spotlight
Music education senior, Jamie Yavorsky, has been named a Remembrance Scholar for the 2013-2014 school year. Thirty-five students are selected annually to commemorate the 35 Syracuse University students lost in the Pan Am 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland. Selection is a great honor. As a future educator, Jamie hopes to use this opportunity to work with local schools to promote hard work and well-roundedness. In teaching, Jamie values the personal connections made with students and aspires to bring music to people of all ages and abilities in ways that celebrate individuality and defy competition, pressure, and generic curricula. Beyond fulfillment of her Remembrance Scholar duties, Jamie is currently working on repertoire for her senior recital and her capstone project for the Renee Crown Honor's Program.
