This Month at Setnor

April is filled with concerts in Setnor! Every ensemble and many students will perform recitals this month. A highlight of the year is the annual Concerto Aria Competition, which will take place on April 23. This year's concert features three talented women and a wonderfully varied program. Zoe Cristina Bates Johnson, soprano, will perform "Ah! Je Veux Vivre" from Gounod's opera Romeo et Juliette. She is pursuing the Master of Music degree in Voice Performance as a student of Dr. Kathleen Roland-Silverstein. Shelby Dems, violin, is a junior in the Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance program and a student of Harumi Rhodes. She will perform the first movement of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219. And Stephanie Mata, flute, will perform Poem for Flute and Orchestra by Charles Griffes. Miss Mata is a sophomore Music Education major and a flute student of Dana DiGennaro.

Alumni Spotlight

Branic Howard MM '11 is currently residing in Brooklyn where he is pursuing a PhD in composition.  Howard's studies have focused on hyperrealism and acoustic ecology.  He has also been working on a grant project that involves sonifying MRI data for SUNY scientists using Max/MSP and ambisonic technology - 3D sound with several speakers. Musically, Howard has continued to write electro-acoustic music, much of the time for a single instrument and electronics.  His interests have broadened into making environmental recordings and experimenting with microphones and recording techniques, both in the studio and in the field for the purpose of integration into his compositions. Additionally, Howard teaches classes in sound design and rudiments of music at Stony Brook. Staying in close contact with Setnor, Howard is working on a piece for Setnor faculty member, Adrienne Kim.

Faculty Feature

Kevin Muldoon BM '10 is a graduate student in Electrical Engineering at SU with a focus in Audio DSP.  He has taught studio recording classes in Setnor for the past three years.  It is his belief that audio engineering is a perfect way to spend one's time as it can both fulfill creative endeavors and satisfy a need to solve problems in a scientific manner. He can be seen as the guitarist/keyboardist in the indie-rock band, Half Sister.  They have been actively playing in the NYC area and have recently produced a self-titled EP (www.halfsistermusic.com).  Kevin plans to move to Brooklyn after graduating this spring to continue his career in music production and engineering.

Student Spotlight

Senior music education major, Rachel Dentinger, recently presented her senior honors project called "Uncommon Action," an inter-disciplinary, dynamic concert event that challenged both the familiar constructs of how concerts are typically presented and school bullying, a topic about which she feels passionately. As a refreshing contrast to the typical concert scenario, musicians were mobile on the stage, and offered theatrical portrayal - through the music commissioned for the project and through choreography - of one student's trials as a victim of bullying.  Dettinger said "I wanted the audience to see a glimmer of character in each of them." The concert became an interactive event for all present, as intermission offered a time for attendees to reflect on the issue at hand by writing their thoughts on posters that framed the space.  This offered a forum for concert-goers to discuss. At the heart of the project was a poem, entitled "Uncommon Action," written and recited by Dentinger during the concert. This provided another layer of meaning came to the events portrayed on stage.
