Applied Music and Performance

This Month at Setnor

Collaboration is critical for musicians. Bringing together musical forces such as singers and pianists, orchestras and choruses, and combing ensembles can result in interesting and successful performances. The spring semester this filled with such collaborations by Setnor ensembles. The Opera Workshop and Symphony Orchestra just concluded a successful run of Too Many Sopranos. February will include a joint concert by the Wind Ensemble and the Liverpool High School Symphonic Band, a Choral Collage Concert showcasing five of our choirs, and the annual PRISM Concert produced and directed by students in the Music Industry degree program. Collaborations will continue in March with the Women's Choir Invitational and Choral Festival and a performance of "Kaddish" by the Oratorio Society with Central New Yorks' new professional orchestra, Symphoria. Finally, April will include the Symphony Orchestra presenting its annual Concerto and Aria Competition Winners Concert and collaborating with the Women's Choir. Please join us for these and many of our other events this spring!

Alumni Spotlight

Emily Katter BM '05 is a pop singer-songwriter with a crowd-pleasing style, based in New York City. Her debut EP "Shining Now" is produced by ROBOPOP's Dan Omelio (BM '05) who co-wrote and produced Maroon 5's chart-topping "Payphone," Gym Class Heroes' hits "Stereo Hearts" and "Ass Back Home," and produced Lana Del Ray's "Videogames." As with many of Omelio's hits, Emily's music resonates with touches of soul, dance, and R&B. Emily has a vocal and music industry background, and with the help of coaches like Gordon Grody (who's worked with Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys) she's crafted the sweet and infectious style she records today.  Emily also has a publishing deal in place with Fieldhouse Music, part of BMG Chrysalis. Billboard magazine named Emily to its "Next Big Sound" chart in June 2012 and respected Grammy.com music blogger, Arjan, called her debut single "Heart Explosion" "lush, soulful" and "accomplished." The dance-floor-ready single features a street-smart cameo by rapper Hybrid Infamous.

Faculty Feature

Daniel S. Godfrey, professor in the Department of Music Composition, Theory and History, is busy with various premieres this semester. In October, his concerto for soprano saxophone and sixteen instrumentalists, "Four Dawns over bard's Isle," premiered at the Bowling Green New Music Festival. A quintet for strings, commissioned by Chamber Music America, will premiere in mid-March at Symphony Space in New York City. Another future project includes a piano concerto, commissioned for the Minnesota Orchestra and Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng. Along with fellow faculty composer Nicolas Scherzinger, Godfrey is also preparing for the Seal Bay Festival of American Chamber Music, an innovative, outreach-oriented new music festival on the coast of Maine which he co-founded with SU colleague and composer Andrew Waggoner in 1995. Godfrey has been serving recently on the board of New Music USA, the largest organization in the U.S. supporting jazz and American music for dance, theater and the concert hall. This year Godfrey also joined the artistic advisory committee of the Bogliasco Foundation, which supports fellowships in the arts internationally for its residence facility near Genoa, Italy.
