This Month at Setnor
If it's January, it's Opera time in the Setnor School of Music! This year's production is Edwin Penhorwood's comic opera Too Many Sopranos. Come see what happens when four sopranos show up at the pearly gates only to be told there is no room for them in the heavenly choir because all the men are in the "other" place. Merriment ensues as they head to the underworld to recruit some men for the choir. Eric Johnson directs the production and James Tapia will conduct three performances in Setnor Auditorium on January 25, 26, and 27. For more information visit the Setnor School of Music Calendar. |

Alumni Spotlight
Music education alumnus Brendan Van Epps B.M. '04, M.M. '05 teaches beginning band and general music at Onondaga Hill Middle School in the Westhill Central School District, Syracuse, NY. In addition to teaching, he is an author and active composer with several compositions to his credit, including works for beginning and developing wind band, and a full-length album "When She Dances". He has recently completed The Sight Reading Book with colleague and SU alumna Erin (Althen) Tapia, B.M. '03, M.M. '04. The book follows New York State's exact guidelines for sight-reading. He has also written The Beginning Band Method, a three-level instrumental series for beginning and advancing music students. Concepts in this series are presented one at a time and with music that students are already familiar with, thereby allowing them to concentrate on the new concept rather than unfamiliar notes and rhythms. Each book contains many musical examples that are familiar to young music students. |

Faculty Feature
Violinist Harumi Rhodes joined the Setnor faculty this year as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Music and Performance. She performs extensively with the Naumburg award-winning ensemble, TRIO CAVATINA, and as Artist Member of the Boston Chamber Music Society. She presented master classes at the Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, and University of Nevada Las Vegas last fall, was an artist/mentor at Music from Copland House's Cultivate, an all-scholarship program for young American composers, and was featured as a 'young, successful female role-model in the arts' by the Mainly Mozart Festival in conjunction with the Girl Scouts program of San Diego. Harumi is looking forward to performing as a guest artist in a memorial concert for composer Elliott Carter in New York City in January, as a soloist in Vivaldi's FourSeasons with the New York Chamber Soloists in Ohio in February, and in several upcoming concerts in the Syracuse area, including the Binghamton Philharmonic Chamber Series (3/24/12) and Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music (3/30/12). |
Student Spotlight
Music Industry student Ryan Drake B.M.'13 is pursuing performance honors and a management studies minor. He has long-standing local involvement in the arts, having participated in the CNY Jazz Arts Foundation and the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra as a trumpeter throughout high school. Currently serving as a development associate with the Winnick Hillel Center, he often works with philanthropists who commonly donate to arts organizations such as Lincoln Center. He spent the past two summers - in 2011 as a VS Intern, and in 2012 as a Corporate Relationships Intern - at Lincoln Center. Drake plans to continue his education by pursing an MPA in non-profit management, specifically to work with arts organizations. Affected by the bankruptcy of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Drake's aim is clear, stating "if there aren't arts organizations for jazz and classical music, I haven't served my purpose." Additionally, Drake is Head of Marketing for Syracuse University Records. |
