This Month at Setnor
November offers a cornucopia of opportunities to hear Setnor musicians in concert! We will present 22 performances, a variety of lectures, and master classes by world-famous soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson, master composer John Musto, and amazing pianist Anton Nel. November also means we will welcome our alumni back to campus with a full slate of performances planned for Orange Central starting with a special concert on Friday, November 9, at 3:00 featuring the Symphony Orchestra, University Singers, faculty pianist Steven Heyman, and University Organist Olukola Owolabi. The weekend will also include Kal Ridley's graduate guitar recital, the Morton Schiff Jazz Ensemble, a faculty recital by soprano Janet Brown and pianist Fred Karpoff, the Saxophone Ensemble, Oratorio Society, and guest artists Ensemble Nordlys. And, the "Pride of the Orange" Syracuse University Marching Band will perform during the game at the Dome on Saturday! Please take advantage of our varied offerings by joining us live in Setnor Auditorium or listen to our concerts streaming online. |

Ra Ra Riot in Residence
Indie rock band Ra Ra Riot will be in residence November 12-15. During this time the musicians and support team will visit various music and music industry classes and will perform a concert in Setnor Auditorium on November 14, for which they will be joined by Wired Strings. Ra Ra Riot formed in the spring semester of 2006 at Syracuse University with strong Setnor connections. Violinist Rebecca Zeller BM '07 and the band's manager, Josh Roth (music industry minor '06), studied together in the music industry program. The band has recorded two international releases for Barsuk Records and toured the world supporting those releases. They have also licensed their song "Boy" to Honda for Civic commercials and to the College of Visual and Performing Arts for promotional purposes. The Ra Ra Riot Residency is funded by the Department of Music and Entertainment Industries' Bandier Program and Syracuse University Arts Engage. |

Faculty Feature
Setnor School of Music's Music Education Department is pleased to welcome its newest faculty member, Dr. Nicole Robinson. Dr. Robinson received her Ph.D. from The Florida State University, and her master's and bachelor's degrees from North Carolina Central University. Prior to her appointment at SU, she held a faculty position at the University of Memphis where she was an Associate Professor and Music Education Division Head. Her responsibilities at Syracuse University will focus on the teaching of general music methods and serving as the faculty advisor for the Setnor School's collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
Dr. Robinson's current research is focused on music education in urban schools, specifically exploring ways to recruit, prepare, and retain music teachers in urban environments. She has also co-authored Teaching Elementary Music: Integrative Strategies between Music and Other Subjects (Kendall Hunt Publishing), which is now in its second edition. |
Student Spotlight
Emma Logan BM '12 is eager to continue on her path as a composer. She is currently pursuing a master of music degree in composition at Setnor and plans to further her studies next year, and continue to develop as a composer. With percussion being her primary performance area, she is excited to have her first commission for a marimba piece, to be performed in March. The piece will be centered on the concept of Truth and its relative fragility. Also on Logan's desk, at present, is her first work for full orchestra. She is eager to have the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra read and record her work in late October. Logan has experienced tremendous growth at Setnor both during her undergraduate and graduate studies. In addition to her composition degree, she completed a minor in music industry and hopes to put her publishing and engraving skills to use in her career. |
