As part of its work to engage with members on advancing reconciliation, the Federation is co-organizing a half-day public forum at Congress 2016 on June 1 to support dialogue among HSS disciplines on their roles in acting on recommendations from the 1996 Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission reports. Federation President Stephen J. Toope's May 5 op-ed in the Ottawa Citizen "Here's how we can improve decision-making in the federal government" points to Canada's opportunity to create a science-advice system that's best in class. Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan quoted Toope in her op-ed the very next day!
Canada Prizes at Congress 2016
Please join us to celebrate the winners of the 2016 Canada Prizes at Congress. Caroline Caron, Caroline Durand, Nancy Turner and Brian Young will discuss their prize winning books with the Federation's new President-Elect Guy Laforest during a special event on Sunday, May 29 at 15:45 in Expo.
Big Thinking on the Middle East
The systemic collapse of a political order established more than 100 years ago is creating ripples far beyond the Middle East region. Janice Stein of the Munk School of Global Affairs spoke about the implications for Canadian strategy last month at Big Thinking on the Hill.
Big Thinking on Canada's Origins
At the final Big Thinking on the Hill this season, Kathleen Mahoney of University of Calgary proposed resetting Canada's origin story. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Confederation, she called for acknowledgement of the foundational contributions of Indigenous peoples. The May 10 video will be posted shortly, and see her op-ed in The Globe and Mail.

All General Assembly representatives are invited to participate in the Federation's 2016 Annual General Meeting, which will take place at Congress 2016 on Sunday, May 29 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm in MacEwan Hall, Ballroom 301 at the University of Calgary. The registration deadline has been extended to May 13.

HODI Award in Built Heritage Conservation
Carleton University and the Board of Directors of Historic Ottawa Development Inc. (HODI) announced the winners of the inaugural HODI Award in Built Heritage Conservation. Recipients are involved in projects aimed at safeguarding and rehabilitating historic buildings in Ottawa.

Final 5 Storytellers at Congress
The Top 25 Storytellers in SSHRC's annual contest will deliver their presentations before a live audience at the Storytellers Showcase on May 30 from 10 am to 12 noon in the Main Expo Event Space at Congress. Attend, enjoy and find out who the final five winners will be.
Carleton Indigenous Research Ethics Course
The Carleton University on the Ethics of Research with Indigenous Peoples is offering a six-day intensive course June 5-10 that will give participants the opportunity to learn best practices for engaging in research with Indigenous Peoples. Registration is ongoing.
SSHRC Connection Grants: Next deadline August 1
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is recognizing the milestone of Canada's 150th Anniversary of Confederation with a unique series of Connection Grants for scholarly activities that mobilize research about Canada at 150-its past, present and future. The grants are typically valued at $7,000 to $50,000 over one year. Learn more here!

Be heard! The Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, announced a review of the federal government's cultural policy toolkit. Until May 20, there's an opportunity to participate in a pre-consultation questionnaire that will help shape the broader consultation. Learn more by reading the pre-consultation paper.
