University of Calgary to host Congress 2016
The University of Calgary has been selected to host the 2016 edition of Canada's largest academic gathering, the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, which organizes Congress every year, and the university made the announcement last month. Federation President Antonia Maioni, University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon, and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi all expressed their excitement at the announcement.

Congress 2016 will take place from May 28 to June 3, 2016. Read the full announcement here
Congress 2014: Borders without boundaries
The 2014 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences is taking place at Brock University, May 24-30, 2014. Nestled between two Great Lakes in the heart of Ontario's wine country, Brock University is one of a handful of universities to be situated in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The university, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2014, is a dynamic centre of research and learning excellence, and will be a fun and inspiring location for Congress 2014.
 
See the list of associations participating in Congress this year, and find information to help arrange your travel and accommodations on the Congress website. Registration for Congress 2014 will open in mid-January.

 

Ron Deibert Big Thinking lecture now online
Last month's Big Thinking lecture "After Snowden: What now for a free and open Internet?" presented by Ron Deibert, Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs' Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, is available on to view online. This lecture addressed the current outlook for cyber-security, and what recent revelations about surveillance will mean for a free, open and secure Internet.

This month's Big Thinking lecture, featuring Céline Le Bourdais, professor at McGill University, Canada Research Chair in Social Statistics and Family Change and academic director of the McGill QICSS Branch, examines the significance of common law partnerships through the lens of the stability of unions and management of their shared finances. It took place yesterday (December 10th) and will be posted to our website shortly.

New SSHRC and Mitacs partnership
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Mitacs are partnering up for a new project aimed at connecting more Canadian companies with social sciences and humanities graduates. Announced on November 26th, the initiative will see Mitacs Accelerate consult with Canada's social sciences and humanities researchers with a view to evolving its internship programs to better support the SSH research community and its needs. "Business success and innovation in the 21st century comes from a deep understanding of people-our cultures and history, our behaviour, and the motivations that influence our decision-making," said Chad Gaffield, president of SSHRC. Call for CIHR Synapse Mentorship Award nominations
Nominations are open for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Synapse Mentorship Awards, which recognize the efforts of those who promote health research among Canada's high school students. One winner will be selected for each of three categories: one graduate student/postdoctoral fellow student, one accomplished researcher and one research group. A list of past recipients as well as eligibility requirements and nomination procedures can be found on the CIHR website. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, January 24th, 2014.
Have Your Say in Canada's digital infrastructure
The Leadership Council for Digital Infrastructure is seeking your input. The Council has launched an online 'crowdsourcing' campaign to get fresh ideas on how to build a world-leading digital infrastructure (DI) ecosystem for Canada. Ideas can be provided in the "Have Your Say" link on the Council's new website until January 19, 2014.

The Top 25 finalists will present their pitches at the 2014 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences at Brock University.
