New Congress hashtag

The Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences draws thousands of people each year, and one of the best places for attendees to connect with the Federation, the host university, and each other is on Twitter. Last year, we encouraged users to label their tweets about Congress with the hashtag #congress2013, and the year before that we used #congress2012. We noticed, however, that hashtags in this format can present a number of problems, so we developed a new one to be used in 2014 and beyond. Check out our blog post to get the story behind the new and improved Congress hashtag: #CongreSSH.

Success at the Power of the Arts National Forum

The inaugural Power of the Arts National Forum took place from September 27-29 at Carleton University, presented by the school's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Michaëlle Jean Foundation. Federation President Antonia Maioni delivered a keynote speech about the democratic potential of the arts for society, and Executive Director Jean-Marc Mangin summed up his thoughts on the Forum in a blog post, calling for stronger collaboration between the social sciences and the arts.

The first Leibniz Lecture in Canada

On October 16, 2013, the German Research Foundation (DFG) will present the first Leibniz Lecture to take place in Canada, which will be held at the University of Ottawa. The lecture, entitled "Toleration and Democracy," will see German political philosopher Rainer Forst discuss different conceptions of "toleration", and how an understanding of the notion based on mutual respect is the appropriate one for a modern, pluralist democracy. The event will take place at 6 pm in room 4007 of the Social Science Building. On October 17th, Forst will head to Toronto to provide a second lecture entitled "Two Pictures of Justice".

Governor General's Literary Awards recognize ASPP-funded books

Two books that were funded by the Federation's Award to Scholarly Publications Program have been nominated for the 2013 Governor General's Literary Awards. Sandra Djwa's Journey with No Maps: A Life of P.K. Page, published by McGill-Queen's University Press, is a finalist in the English Non-Fiction category, and Dominique Perron's L'Alberta autophage : Identités, mythes et discours du pétrole dans l'Ouest canadien, published by University of Calgary Press, is a finalist in the French Non-Fiction category.  Read more about these titles and the awards on our blog.

New AUCC website about the value of a liberal arts degree

The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) launched a new website that features short videos highlighting how positive university experiences can lead to rewarding careers in the future. The website, called UniversityWorks, includes testimonials by graduates from across the country, each reflecting on their personal university experience and how it has impacted their transition into the world of work. Some of the topics discussed so far include internships, studying abroad, and the opportunities created by pursuing an arts degree, and AUCC is inviting other Canadian graduates to submit videos sharing their own stories.

The World Social Science Forum is this weekend

The World Social Science Forum will be taking place from October 13th-15th at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal. The theme of the conference is "Social Transformations and the Digital Age", and more than 1,000 delegates from about 80 countries are expected to attend. The Federation will be there with a booth in the exhibition, so be sure to stop by and say hello!
