Join us at the Federation's Annual Conference: Imagining Canada's Future
Registration for the Federation's Annual Conference and AGM is now open! While the AGM is open only to members of the Board of Directors and the General Assembly, the Annual Conference is open to the public. The meetings will take place at the Ottawa Marriott Hotel on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The day will feature a panel discussion with Alex Usher of Higher Education Strategy Associates and Dr. Eliot Phillipson of the Council of Canadian Academies on the state of humanities and social science research in Canada, followed by a promising keynote address by John Ralston Saul : A Country Won or Lost by its Intellectuals. Big Thinking: Addressing bullying and children's health
Join Dr. Wendy Craig, Professor of Psychology at Queen's University and Scientific Co-Director at PREVNet (Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network), on February 14 as she discusses how promoting healthy relationships can help prevent bullying and foster positive mental health and well-being. In this talk, Dr. Craig will explore policy strategies and changes that can improve the physical, emotional, social, and academic outcomes for Canadian youth-the future of our country. Register for the next Big Thinking event here.
Board elections
Following nominations for open positions on the Federation's Board of Directors, three positions were acclaimed.  Two of those positions went to incumbents willing to serve a second two-year term:  Director, Research Dissemination (Raymond Siemens, University of Victoria) and Treasurer (Lyne Sauvageau, Université du Québec).  The third acclaimed position, Director, Research Policy, went to Lisa Philipps (York University).  In addition, the Board of Directors, upon canvassing with the ASPP Academic Council, appointed Anne-Marie Fortier (Université Laval) as Chair, ASPP.  The successful four candidates for Director, Associations and Director, Institutions will be announced once elections conclude. Antonia Maioni will begin her two year term as President at the AGM in March.
SSHRC Storytellers program launches
Last week, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council launched a new competition, Research for a Better Life: The Storytellers. The competition invites Canadian university students to submit a three-minute pitch in their choice of format -- text, video, etc. -- on SSHRC-funded research from their institution. Twenty-five finalists will be invited to attend a special communications workshop at the 2013 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Afterwards, they will deliver a "three-minute-thesis"-style talk at the Storytellers Showcase at Congress, competing for one of five slots to deliver a featured presentation at this year's World Social Science Forum in Montreal. See SSHRC's website for more information.

Stay tuned this month for a series of announcements related to the Canada Prizes in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including the announcement of the jury members and, later in February, the list of finalists. The winners will be announced mid-March, with the official prize ceremony taking place on March 23 in conjunction with the Federation's Annual Conference, where John Ralston Saul will deliver the keynote address.
