Message

There is an outpouring of anger over the gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi where women, in general, feel less safe. On behalf of MAFS family I express my profound sympathy to entire nation and more particularly to the family who has lost her daughter in this horrific incident. We seriously condemn such atrocities.Trauma and pain she has gone is unbelievable and I am more shocked that this has happened in our land of Mahatma and Lord Gautam.

Entire nation was triggered by this barbaric act. Their message is clear: this kind of crime against women will not be tolerated and strong legal system should be enacted.

However, this is time to give the people's movement greater relevance by thinking how this unprecedented energy can be channelized to secure more effective and durable outcomes.

The goal must be to create an overall environment in which women feel safe and comfortable.

MAFS Success Stories

Scorching inflation, rising costs, and depleting standard of living has adverse impacts in the lives of many. In this low economic scenario, Metropolitan Asian Family Services Social workers are working hard to restore comfort, compassion and love in communities. They are the team of highly dedicated and self-motivated individuals, working hard to bring smile in the faces of ignorant immigrants who are trying to understand alien culture, language and customs.

Shree Gurusamy, MAFS Social Worker recently helped a Punjabi family of 5- parents and 3 kids. Their life replete with lot of personal crisis and hardship, their home was in foreclosure, their youngest daughter was diagnosed with cancer and father who was the only bread earner lost his jobs. In September 2012 this broken family knocked the doors of MAFS. Ms. Gurusamy devoted her personal time to help this family, she assisted them to enroll in the hardest hit fund program through the Illinois Housing Development Authority and they received assistance to recover from the foreclosure. They also received mortgage assistance for the next 12 month. They also received SSI and medical insurance benefits from the state.

Another such story which reaffirms our faith and trust is the services rendered by MAFS is a story of 52 years old widow. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She came to MAFS for help. Gurusamy enrolled her in IL Breast and Cervical Cancer program which immediately provided Medicaid coverage for her treatment. She is now receiving chemo therapy and radiation treatment.

At MAFS we provides following services - Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, benefit assistance program, nutrition program, kids care, food stamp, LIHEAP, federal health, health promotion and disease prevention program, English and Citizenship teachings, computer training, immigration and citizenship assistance programs.

Health Tip for Seniors

Participating in regular healthy amounts of physical activity can not only make you feel better, but it can make you less prone to diabetes, heart disease, and colon cancer. Staying active can be difficult for senior citizens, still it is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

The following are some tips for maintaining a lifestyle that incorporates physical activity:
  • Know what amount of physical activity is appropriate for you. Everyone has different levels of activity that is safe for them, and while remaining active is important, always consult a health care provider about what is right for your lifestyle.
  • Take time to warm up, cool down, or take breaks when participating in a session of increased physical activity.
  • Take it slow. Always start slowly and build up to more intense levels of physical activities.
  • If you experience any pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath during exercise, stop the activity immediately.
  • Drink water.
  • Dress appropriately if you decide to exercise outdoors. Wear warmer clothes during the winter and wear lighter clothes during the summer while applying sunscreen or wearing sunglasses.
  • Wear the correct shoes for the activities that you participate in.
