| Pantry removed, walls taken out, new flooring, cabinets & countertop all done by the homeowners and friends! |
|
Greetings!
In the last issue, I spoke of enjoying being a freelance designer because I get to meet and work with a variety of clients. Sometimes it's the contractor and other times I'll be working for the homeowner - providing just the plans, helping with product selection or overseeing the entire project.
This month's clients were definitely "hands-on". He loves wood working. They planned to DIY and asked me to create the plan for their small kitchen and they would take it from there. The existing kitchen was crowded and closed in. A pantry at the back was hard to access and the homeowners really wanted a dishwasher and usable cabinet space.
 | BEFORE - Outdated and lack of storage space |
Once I had their priorities I went to the "drawing board" (my CAD program on my computer) and started the design work. I created a few plans and after much discussion they selected the one they thought was best for them. I provided a shopping list of the cabinets and other items they would need.
They shopped locally for all their products and were fortunate to have a son and neighbor who were somewhat experienced in kitchen remodeling. They ran into some "challenges"...normal in remodeling an older home...but are very happy with the end results.
 | Wall on far left was removed to open the kitchen to the dining area. 42" high wall cabinets were added after the soffits were removed. Can lights and a new ceiling fan replaced the outdated fluorescent fixtures. |
When they invited me back to see the finished product I really enjoyed their enthusiasm and the lovely, workable kitchen they're now enjoying...especially all the storage and the dishwasher, too!
Whatever your construction design needs may be, please give me a call and let me show you how I can make them come true for you!

This Month's Tip
Keeping Berries Fresher Longer
|
An easy trick that will extend the refrigerator shelf life of berries that are enclosed in clear plastic "jewel boxes"...turn the box over every day - either a 1/4 turn (onto it's side) or a 1/2 turn (bottom up). This will allow air to circulate (give a gentle shake) and will keep berries from getting soft and moldy.
 | Strawberry Jewel Box |
I always start the process as soon as I bring them home from the grocery store, by taking out one or two of the largest berries to give a little breathing room to the rest and turn the box upside down.
Yum...one (or two) for the cook!
