Anthony McGill, principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, along with his brother, flutist Demarre McGill, appeared on the Today show on NBC on February 27th. Their appearance can be viewed on the show's website.

The New York Philharmonic has named Stephen Williamson as their new principal clarinetist. Mr. Williamson has served as the principal clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony since 2011 and will officially be on leave from that position next year. He succeeds Stanley Drucker, who retired from the New York Philharmonic in 2009 after 60 years with the orchestra.

The 2013 Texas Clarinet Colloquium was held on the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus, March 1st-3rd. The event, which hosted 291 people this year, started in 2007 as a small community outreach project (Northeast Texas Clarinet Day) but has expanded into a significant event meriting national attention. This year's TCC attracted attendees from 3 countries, 9 states, 24 colleges and universities, 25 high schools, and 16 elementary, middle and junior high schools. Guests included Jos� Franch-Ballester, Mark Nuccio, Janice Minor, Nathan Williams, David Carter, Garry Evans, Paula Corley, Wolfgang Lohff and Richard Shanley, who was honored as the recipient of the 2013 Texas Clarinet Colloquium Service Award.

 The Fifth Annual Florida Clarinet Extravaganza was held March 9th-10th on the campus of the University of North Florida. This year's event included master classes, recitals and a vendors' showcase. Guest artists included Keith Koons, Ilan Schul, Tasha Warren, Peter Wright, Lynn Musco and Guy Yehuda. 

     

Thai Clarinet Competition
2013 Thailand Clarinet Competition

 The Thailand Clarinet Competition 2013 took place February 16th-18th at the Culture Center of Chulalongkorn University. It is the first clarinet competition of its kind in Thailand and was organized by Yos Vaneesorn from Silpakorn University and Choowit Yurayong from Chulalongkorn University. Besides the competition, there were also concerts, master classes, and workshops. The winner of the Class A division (ages 18-25) was Supak Wittayanukulluk, a senior from Silpakorn University. The Class B division (under 18) winner was Pantamitr Kanhasiri from Mahidol University. The judges were Steve Cohen (head judge), Nophachai Choltidchanta and Leo Phillips.

The Second Lisbon International Clarinet Competition was held in Lisbon, Portugal, March 25th-28th. First prize was awarded to Kie Umehara, second prize to Joan Garcia and third prize was given to Rh�a Vallois. The jury members incuded Michel Arrignon (President), Karel Dohnal, Antonio Tinelli, Jean-S�bastien B�reau and Rui Martins. The third Lisbon International Clarinet Competition will be held in 2015. UCF Clarinet Day

  The Twenty-third Annual UCF Clarinet Day was held at the University of Central Florida on February 16th. The event was hosted by Keith Koons and featured a recital and masterclass with guest artist Alcides Rodriguez. The Cypress Creek High School Clarinet Choir performed, and all participants enjoyed a mass clarinet choir reading session.

Coming Events

Assisi Italy  

The Accademia Italiana del Clarinetto, in collaboration with the city of Assisi, will host ClarinetFest 2013 July 24th through 28th in the historic city of Assisi, in the Umbria region of Italy. The premiere event of its kind, ClarinetFest includes performers from around the world, lectures and demonstrations on a wide variety of topics, industry exhibits and much, much more!  More information about this event can be found at http://www.clarinet.org/clarinetFest2013.asp.


On Wednesday April 10th, the 16th Annual Midwest ClariFest will be held on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Hosted by Diane Barger, the event will include classes and performances by Suzanne Tirk, David Kamran and Richard Viglucci. The South Florida Clarinet Fest will take place April 12th-13th on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. The festival will include several performances, master classes and industry exhibitors. Artists include Jos� G�mez, Phillip O. Paglialonga, Jos� Garc�a Taborda, Stacey McColley and Laura Stephenson. The Buffet Summer Academy happens July 15th-20th at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. The curriculum will include daily private lessons, master classes and lectures. This year's artist faculty will include Ixi Chen, Stanley Drucker, Daniel Gilbert, Jonathan Gunn and Andr� Moisan. More information about this event can be found at www.buffet-crampon.com

Dr. Guy Yehuda was appointed Associate Professor of Clarinet at Michigan State University in Lansing. He will begin his tenure at MSU in the fall.

Dr. Jonathan Holden was appointed Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Dr. Holden will start at FSU in the fall.

Lee Gibson
O. Lee Gibson

 O. Lee Gibson (1916-2013), prominent clarinetist, pedagogue and author died on January 26, 2013. Gibson served as President of the International Clarinet Society from 1978 to 1980, and also as the first editor of The Clarinet (1973-1978). Gibson served as professor of clarinet at the University of North Texas for many years and was recognized by the ICA in 1998 with Honorary Membership. Read more
