Our Work
Iqra Fund works in remote communities in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, that are very literally at the end of the road.

Getting to our program site in Hunza, deep in the Karakorum mountains, requires a flight from Islamabad to Gilgit; a six-hour drive over the Karakorum Highway (KKH) that gains over 3,000 ft. of elevation and follows the winding, glacially-fed Hunza River; and a boat ride across Attabad Lake-a body of water the size of Manhattan created by the devastating landslide of 2010.
Residents of the villages of upper Hunza move seamlessly between so-called modern and traditional ways of life. Although electricity runs a few days per week, the traditional two- and three-room homes are warmed by wood and coal-fired stoves.
Many homes also have satellite television and running water, though water pipes regularly freeze in the winter and water must be hauled from the river. Gathering wood and collecting water, along with other tasks such as preparing food over wood-burning stoves is time and labor intensive, and children are often relied upon to help-their study-time divided by work-time.
Nevertheless, many parents in the Hunza region express over and over their commitment to their children's education. As one of our scholarship students explained, "My mother wouldn't let me work at home so that I could study. Now when I come home, I help teach my younger brothers and sisters and other younger students in the village."

Confidence Building
Providing access to quality education is more than simply covering the cost of students' school fees.
To realize their dreams of becoming educated leaders who will serve their villages in the future, students must also be given opportunities to gain confidence and public speaking skills.
This January, during our scholarship students' winter vacation, Iqra Fund sponsored its first one-day professional development workshops in Golmit and Sost in upper Hunza. Over 120 of our 143 scholarship students attended the workshops, along with several community leaders and representatives from civil society organizations. More

Three Friends, Three Dreams
"When I was young I said I want to go and I want to learn," says Uzma. "My father believed in me. He said he would support me to come here and study, that once I came I would work hard and achieve my goals."
Along with Faiza and Nelum, and Uzma is one of Iqra Fund's oldest scholarship students in Aliabad. Originally from

neighboring villages in Upper Hunza, they've lived and studied together for four years, supporting one another in pursuing their dreams. Nelum and Uzma want to become doctors, while Faiza aspires to become a captain in the army.
Soft-spoken, yet quietly confident, they recall their daily routines and experiences before coming to Aliabad. More
