NEW POOL MAKES BIG SPLASH FOR SCOUTS
|
On July 13, 2014 donors and officials of the Central Florida Council Boy Scouts of America officially christened the Brown & Brown Insurance Aquatics Center at the Leonard & Marjorie Williams Family Scout Reservation in Paisley, FL. The sparkling complex includes a new 7,500 square foot zero entry pool with a water slide feature to be used year round for our scouting families. Project funding also allowed for a complete renovation of the existing pool to compliment the new pool features. New buildings include a 5,000 square foot Aquatics joint use building equipped with restrooms, lockers and support facilities for our expanded Aquatics programs. A breeze-way houses picnic tables and a "buddy board" for personalized tags indicating a swimmer's ability level. Scouts were able to begin using both pools on the first day of summer camp in June thanks to a completion that was on-time and under budget.
A one million dollar donation was provided by Hyatt and Cici Brown and the Brown & Brown Insurance team to make this project a reality. "We are pleasantly surprised and impressed by what our gift was able to accomplish" says Hyatt Brown on behalf of his wife Cici and son Powell Brown, who is President and CEO of Brown and Brown Insurance. Also in attendance were Charlie Lydecker & Robert Lloyd. The Brown's support Scouting not necessarily because they had children participate in the program but because they embrace the movement. Cici's father was an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster. Both Charlie and Robert have been Scouting volunteers for more than twenty years and have held positions on the Council Executive Board.

If you understand that the main thing in Scouting is providing character education to young people... and you know trained volunteers help make that happen... and you know strong units with vibrant program take the time to plan out their calendar and budget... then you understand Popcorn is a tool that equals PROGRAM! And lots of exciting things are happening in the Popcorn campaign in August: Don't forget to find great resources at: http://popcorn.cflscouting.org If you have any questions, please contact our Council Popcorn Kernel, Jodi Peterman, at petermanconsultingservices@gmail.com or our Popcorn Staff Advisor, Chris Crowley, at chris.crowley@cflscouting.org

Troop 33 Visits their County Commissioners
|

In an effort to promote awareness in our community government and process, Troop 33, of Woodbury Presbyterian Church, Merit Badge Counselors and Advancement Committee arranged a visit with our County Commissioner Jennifer Thompson. Her office was told about our group working on two Merit Badges that required a visit to a government meeting where opposing views were discussed and happily obliged! These 10 Scouts are working on their Communications and Citizenship in the Community MB's and happily threw on their scout uniforms at 7:45 a.m. to attend the meeting on Tuesday, July 8th. Commissioner Thompson greeted the group privately prior to the full meeting and asked the boys questions about what they were working on and what they wanted to achieve from their visit. Once in session, Mayor Teresa Jacobs asked Commissioner Thompson to introduce her guests and they were nice enough to invite us up for a group picture, said Scoutmaster David Mott. Luckily enough, the Board of County Commissioners found themselves in a healthy discussion and debate regarding the pending purchase of two buildings for their Tax Collector and Property Appraisers offices. This provided ample material for our boys to gather and digest for their reports. The adults that attended were also very interested in the discussion as well. It was a great morning for Troop 33, Little Econ District and the Central Florida Council! Thank you to Commissioner Jennifer Thompson and her staff for helping make this happen!

Time to get your Pack ready for Fall recruitment ...
|
You and your Pack play a key role in getting new families, adults and youth to join Cub Scouts!!!
A successful recruitment plan requires a team effort! The District and the Cub Scout Pack need to work hand in hand to promote Scouting within the School, community and church. It is important that the parents and boys who plan to join Scouting this Fall attend the sign-up at their school. Parents who are present at sign-up with the new den are more likely to become leaders than those who join alone. Learn More »

Often the comment, "That training is only offered once a year," has been said. While that may be true for some specialized training, the majority of the time that is not the case. It may be that a particular training is only offered one time a year is some districts, but within the council as a whole, leader position specific training, Den Chief training and other youth training is offered multiple times over the course of a year. Please know that anyone - leader or youth - is invited, welcome and encouraged to register for training in any district at the time that is best for the individual.
