Smile! Your Amazon Purchases can now support Scouting!
|
Now every purchase you make from the Earth's biggest online store can support the charity of your choice, including Scouting.
Through its new AmazonSmile program, Amazon will donate 0.5 percent of the price of your eligible purchase to the 501(c)(3) public charitable organization of your choice.
Sure, half a percent isn't much and won't replace your Friends of Scouting contributions that help Scouting function in your community. But it adds up, costs you nothing and is a great additional way to support Scouting.
The one-time setup takes just a couple of seconds (instructions below), and you get the same prices, products and service you're used to when shopping at Amazon. It doesn't cost you any extra; the only difference is now you're helping Scouting every time you buy.
The Boy Scouts of America's National Council and its nearly 300 local councils all are eligible charities. Individual packs, troops, teams, posts, ships and crews aren't eligible to earn money through AmazonSmile.

According to Advancement records recorded by National BSA through your input in 2013, 58% of the registered Cub Scouts and 47% Boy Scouts in Central Florida Council advanced at least one rank.
If these numbers seem low to some of you, and they probably are, it is because some units are not recording their advancements in Internet Advancement. If your Unit is not reporting, please make every effort to start submitting reports. If you do not know how, send me an email at mdeliz@cfl.rr.com.
Merit Badge News
In 2013, over 2,110,800 merit badges were earned by Scouts. Here are some trivia questions:
What was the most earned merit badge?
What was the most earned non-Eagle merit badge?
What was the least earned merit badge (not in Sustainability and Programming which were released in the summer)?
We know about the number of merit badges earned because Scouters report their advancements in Internet Advancement. Please join their ranks!
Important Eagle Scout Information
All Eagle Scout candidates should contact Lynette Dukes, Eagle Registrar, prior to beginning to fill out their Eagle Scout Application. Her email address is: Lynette.Dukes@cflscouting.org
She can provide pertinent information in aiding in the correct filling out of the Application. Current candidates must use the 2014 version of the Eagle Scout Application (Form 512-728).
There has been an inordinate amount of Eagle Scout candidates submitting their Eagle Scout Applications, for verification by Council, several months beyond their 18th birthday. Scouts must take the responsibility that goes along with the rank and submit their Eagle Scout Applications in a timely fashion. An Eagle Scout Board of Review is required to take place within 90 days of the candidates 18th birthday. Therefore, the Central Florida Council Advancement Committee voted to require Eagle Scouts to submit their completed applications to Lynette Dukes upon their 18th birthday for verification. Scouts should make every effort to have their application filled out in its entirety through Requirement 5, when they conduct their Eagle Scout unit leader conference. The Scoutmaster/Coach/Advisor/or Skipper should then sign it upon successful completion of the conference and the unit Committee Chair's signature can be obtained shortly thereafter. The Eagle Scout candidate should remember that planning is a large part of their Service Project and they should plan the submission of their Eagle Scout Application accordingly.
Yours in Scouting,
Mike Deliz

If you are a leader involved in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturing programs, you should be interested in looking at a PDF entitled "2014 - 2016 Program Change Overview" on the national website at http://goo.gl/wJYySz
A better document focusing on Cub Scout and Boy Scout program changes is available at http://goo.gl/LiSISP to get an overview of changes coming our way in 2015 and 2016.
The first changes will be in the Venturing program this year. A PDF document entitled "The Road Map to Venturing" released at the national meeting in Grapevine, TX in 2013 by the National Venturing Task Force can be found at http://goo.gl/OpC5aD . Changes in the Venturing program are expected to be implemented after the BSA national meeting in Nashville, TN in May. Both adult leader and youth Venturing training is being updated and will be released in close proximity to the Venturing program changes.
For a more in-depth look at the new program model for Cub Scouts, which will begin at the start of the 2015 school year nationally, copy and paste this URL into your browser: http://goo.gl/xiuMe8 . Core adventures for Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos are summarized in this document. Visit this site today to see how the three aims and two strong methods of Scouting will be incorporated into the new Cub Scout adventures : *Character development *Participatory citizenship *Personal fitness *Outdoor skills and awareness *Leadership and life skills, as well as the ideals of the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the Scout motto and slogan. New training to reflect changes in the Cub Scout program will begin near the time Cub Scout handbooks and new "Cub Scout Leader" books are published.
For those of you who may not be aware of what "411" means in relation to BSA, it is Pillar 4, Objective 1, Goal 1 of the National Strategic Plan 2011 - 2015. A progress report completed in February 2014 is posted online at http://goo.gl/Ifxu8J for those of you interested in reading it.
More information about the changes in the Boy Scout program will be released by national in the future.
By now, Key Three unit leaders should have access to many MyScouting tools. These tools include Training Manager. 2015 Eagle Scout Directory
|
It is standard practice by universities and other alumni associations to conduct a directory project for alumni about every four years. The last Eagle Scout Directory project was conducted in 2008. Therefore, the National Eagle Scout Association has entered into an agreement with Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI) to publish a 2015 Eagle Scout Directory. PCI is a well-established publisher of alumni directories whose clients include SMU, the University of Colorado, Harvard, and the U.S. Naval Academy. In conjunction with this project, PCI will invite Eagle Scouts to update their information as well as purchase an Eagle Scout directory and/or a NESA membership if they are not already a member.
Updated information collected from Eagle Scouts will be shared with local councils to help you stay in contact with Eagle Scouts who have moved into your council's borders. Information provided from the 2008 directory proved very helpful to councils in re-establishing contact with Eagle Scouts and led to additional support and volunteers.
In order to reduce any confusion or concern regarding the project, please share with Scouters in your council that PCI will conduct its outreach to Eagle Scouts from April through November 2014. Also, you may refer any questions or inquiries to the Eagle Scout Directory FAQ page found at www.nesa.org.

What's Going Around: Hives
|
Unexplained rash? Kids won't stop scratching? Area Centra Care locations are reporting that Urticaria is What's Going Around.
In fact, University Centra Care saw an 800% increase in the number of patients being seen for the condition.
LEARN MORE:
Additional areas that reported an increase include:
Altamonte Springs - 200% Azalea Park - 200% Lake Buena Vista - 200% Lake Buena Vista (kids) - 200% Sanford - 200%
Better known as Hives, Urticaria is the result of allergic reactions, environmental factors, and certain medical conditions. Stress can even be a trigger.
Hives appear as red or white bumps or welts on the skin. They are usually itchy and how long they last varies. Those with seasonal allergies, such as hay fever, often get hives.
To reduce itch, avoid things that increase the warmth of your skin, like hot showers and clothes made of synthetic fabrics and tight-fitting clothing. Over the counter medications like Benadryl can be taken to treat itchy skin.
Go to the Emergency Room immediately or call 911 if any symptoms of difficulty breathing, tongue or throat swelling, or worsening swelling/rash develop.

From Our Council Commissioner
|
Greetings, Central Florida Scouts and Scouter's --
It's hard to believe that I have been your Council Commissioner for the past 3 years. Sadly, this will be the last time I have the chance to speak with you in this capacity via the newsletter. It has been an honor and a privilege to have served with all of the wonderful, talented and dedicated volunteers and professionals here in Central Florida.
To the adults; as I look back and marvel at the absolutely amazing accomplishments that were realized due to all of your passionate desires to support our youth in the Scouting program. Though obstacles and seemingly impossible challenges were put in your way, you have always persevered and excelled in every endeavor, with special recognition to those who were instrumental in the hundreds of young men who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during "our watch"!
To the youth; I salute each and every one of you for the tens of thousands of hours of service in the way of Food Drives, Fund raisers, Scout Shows, etc. that you have so graciously given back to your community. In addition, I want to congratulate all of those young men who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout as well as those Crew and Posts members who have earned the Silver award and William H. Spurgeon III award, respectively. Your resolve to stay focused on the tasks of completing the requirements for those accolades is beyond belief. Of course, in complete candor, I can tell you that you did not surprise me as I know the caliber of youth here in this Council and you all are truly amazing young people!
As I pass the baton of the Commissioners Service to Bill Patterson, I am confident that our units will continue to provide the best character building programs available to the youth in this community. I am also confident that the Central Florida Council will continue to grow and make this program available to more youth in the Central Florida area. I challenge each and every one of you to become an ambassador for Scouting and help generate interest among your family, friends, schools and church's to bring more youth into the program.
In closing, I simply want to thank each and every one of you for everything you do, whether you are an adult volunteer or a youth participant; the program would not exist if it wasn't for you. It has truly been an honor to serve you in Scouting.
God Bless each and all, stay safe, stay in Scouting and;
"I'll see you on the high ground"!
Yours in Scouting,
Bo Terry
Council Commissioner
