Parker's Ride to Victory Lane

Scouters... Start your engines!

Just a few weeks ago Cub Scout & First Grader, Parker got the ride of a lifetime... He rode to school in a race car with Driver Scott Lagasee, Jr!

Team SLR & Driver Scotty are champions of Scouting and spend their time off the track with local Scouts.  Before he hit the speedway to race in the COPD 300, Scotty met up with Cub Scout Parker in Daytona Beach.  Parker is a new Scout who has had perfect attendance and earned all of his badges to date.  He's also had his share of challenges, earlier in the year, was hit by a car while riding  his bicycle in his neighborhood.  Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet and only suffered minor injuries.  And, even on crutches, Parker made it to his Cub Scout meeting that week!

After the ride to school, Parker and some other local Scouts joined up with the rest of the race team and their partner, the Florida Dept. of Transportation.  Together, they talked to the media about bicycle & pedestrian safety.

Cameron Gonzalez
Many of you may have read, or viewed television news broadcasts this past weekend about a tragic accident involving four young men from Apopka who were pushing their disabled vehicle off a dimly lit road in Apopka late Friday evening when they were accidently struck from behind by another vehicle, resulting in the death of two of these young men.

One of these youth was Cameron Gonzalez, the 18 year old son of Connie Prescott, assistant manager of our Scout Shop in Apopka. Cameron was a senior at Apopka High School who always had an infectious smile on his face and befriended everyone he met. He was a promising athlete and an avid baseball player.

Although our collective arms are certainly wrapped around Connie comforting her at this very difficult time, the family is struggling financially to meet the immediate needs for his funeral and burial arrangements. I have established a special account to receive contributions to assist the family through this difficult transition. If you are interested in contributing to this emergency fund, checks may be made out the Central Florida Council with "Cameron Gonzalez Memorial Fund" in the memo or online at http://cameron.cflscouting.org.

The Funeral arrangements for Cameron have been confirmed. The viewing will be held Friday March 7th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at: Baldwin-Fairchild 601 North Park Ave. Apopka. The Service will be held Saturday March 8th at 11:00 am at: St. Patrick's Church 6803 Alt Route Route 441 Mt. Dora

Please keep Connie and her family in your prayers.

Make it your Scouting Program - and your Legacy

The Mission Impact Team has been working to create the opportunities for you to succeed in making Central Florida Council's Scouting your Scouting Program and your personal legacy.

The goals of the Mission Impact Team have been to collect and make available to both the Scouters and Professionals the data of the Central Florida Council's Scouting success. To provide communications throughout the Council to every Scouting Program and every age group involved in these programs both the youth and adults. To coordinate the execution and track the responses/changes needed from you through the Voice of the Scout where you've made your voices heard. To provide venues where you can make your volunteered time cause growth and the betterment in the Central Florida Council's Scouting Program.

The Mission Impact Team consists of the Council's Strategic Plan, Communications, Voice of the Scout, and Legacy Quest.

The Strategic Plan is a documentation and tracking system which presents the actual data and goals for the present year plus providing the planned goals for the next two years ahead. The process documents and tracks every function of the Council's Scouting Program inclusive of Membership, Finance, Program, and Operations.

Communications includes the collection of the Council's Scouting information and the processes and venues to distribute this information to the Scouts, Scouters, Parents, and Communities throughout the Central Florida Area.  The Venues used for this distribution include electronic communication via email, hard copy communications via Roundtable Meetings, the Council's E-Newsletter, the Council's Websites, and Social Medias including Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, Pinterest, and Instagram.

The Voice of the Scout Program is a BSA National Survey Program where you are given the opportunity to make your voices heard on how the Central Florida Council's Scouting Program is doing providing your Scouting Adventure. Responses are collected and changes are made improving the Scouting program for all involved.

See and hear Aaron Taylor with Cory Critenden performing Live - a little bit of country ... and a little bit Rock.

Legacy Quest consists of five Volunteer Programs for adults to provide their volunteer service to the Council. These programs are - Blackshirts (the council's event team), Campmasters (Camp's customer service team), CAMP (Camp's activity manpower team), S3 (Council's service center team), and C4 (the council's Camp/Service Center physical development team).

It is your Scouting Program as a Scout or Scouter, become involved in the your Scouting Adventure - One Movement, One BSA, United We Grow - Scouts, Scouters, and Professionals working in unity.

Come visit the Mission Impact Booth near the tower at the Scout Show on April 26th at the UCF Stadium and find out what's new in Central Florida Council's Scouting and how you can become part of Scouting's Growth.

Advancement News

In 2013, Boy Scouts of America awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to 56, 842 Life Scouts.  The service hours associated with their Eagle Scout Leadership Service Projects totaled 9,347,047.  Just imagine all of the positive impact these projects had on their local communities.  Here within Central Florida Council the number of Eagle Scouts totaled 408 with their projects having a combined total of 66,247 service hours.  These Leadership Projects had an average of 162 service hours benefiting the 11 District's within the Council.  We would like to recognize Ft. Gatlin District, which produced 81 Eagle Scouts during the past year.

We can report these impressive numbers because they are recorded by the various BSA Councils and sent to National, and that is where we need your help.  Recording your Cub Scout and Boy Scout advancements through Internet Advancement allows the Districts, Council, and National BSA to track percentages of Scouts advancing, just like they can track Eagle Scouts.

Advancements are an indicator of Unit health and are one of the eight methods used by Scout leaders to fulfill the aims of the BSA.  So, please start or continue to record your advancements and remember that signed Internet Advancement Reports are required to get rank advancements at the Scout Shops.

The newest merit badge, Mining in Society was released on 2/24/14 and the Digital Technology (which replaces Computers) should be released in March.

Finally, a special shout out to Eagle Scout Steven Holcomb, who won Bronze Medals during the recently completed Sochi Winter Olympics in the 2-Man and 4-Man Bobsleds events.  Eagle Scouts truly fly high!

Yours in Scouting

Mike Deliz

Training

It's time again for units to begin turning in their applications for Central Florida Council's Excellence in Training Award. The applications and required documentation can be sent to Cindy Miller, CFC Training Chair, at [email protected] (preferred) or [email protected] beginning January 31. The last date applications will be accepted is April 20. If you have not heard about this award and are interested in receiving the requirements and application, please send a request via email to the preferred address noted. This award is a colorful ribbon that can be displayed on your unit's flag, in a Chartered Organization display, a unit display, or in the way that works best for your unit. Show your Scouting youth that adults care about being basic leader trained by encouraging all of the registered adults in your unit, including your Chartered Organization Representative, to complete their basic leader training to qualify for this award. The ribbon and its accompanying certificate will be given to district executives prior to your district's annual recognition banquet late Spring. Please do not ask your DE for the application. It is only available online via Yahoo! groups' CFC training chair's Monday Morning Message or by email request.

In general, the main reasons leaders give for not being trained are the time commitment and the distance in travel to get there. Just about any trained leader will tell you that understanding the basics of the program they are involved in saves them more hours than the training they took to begin with. And, they can tell you that tips and ideas shared by others at the training saved them more research and telephone time. There are 45 basic leader training courses or sessions being offered in Central Florida Council this winter and spring. Training is offered at various locations in different districts - and leaders can register for what they need no matter what district is offering it. Sometimes that means going to training in another district that is closer to home than one in your own district. So, join other leaders in the position you are registered for in other districts to broaden your resource base and make new acquaintances!

The council website will soon have the complete listing of training scheduled for 2014, and into 2015, when pdfs of the training calendar are posted! Once the calendar (or its pages) is added, visit it often for updates.

What's Going Around: Vertigo

Do you ever feel dizzy? Lightheaded? Off balance?

If you feel that the room is spinning, you may have Vertigo.

Centra Care physicians have been treating a number of patients lately for the type of Vertigo known as Peripheral Vertigo.

LEARN MORE:

It involves an issue with the part of the inner ear that controls balance - the vestibular labyrinth or semicircular canals.

The problem may also involve the vestibular nerve, which connects the inner ear to the brainstem.

The main symptom of Vertigo is the feeling that you or the room is moving or spinning. The spinning sensation may even cause nausea.

Other symptoms can include:

  • Difficulty focusing the eyes
  • Dizziness
  • Hearing loss in one ear
  • Loss of balance
  • Ringing in the ears

A sudden drop in blood pressure or being dehydrated can make you dizzy. Many people feel lightheaded if they get up too quickly from sitting or lying down. Medicines may cause dizziness, or problems with your ear.

Even motion sickness can make you dizzy. And while dizziness usually gets better by itself or is easily treated, it can be a symptom of other disorders, so if you're noticing frequent dizziness, you should see a doctor to have it checked out.
