Scout "Hero" Spotlight

One afternoon in November, Webelos Scout, Jonathan & his siblings were playing in the sand next to their backyard swimming pool.  Suddenly three year-old Jesse slipped on the wet cement and fell in!  He had started swim lessons earlier that summer but still required a flotation device and quickly began struggling for air under the weight of his wet clothing.

Jonathan heard the splash and realized right away that something was wrong.  He was a new Webelos Scout and hadn't gone through much training or even completed his Aquanaut activity badge, but he knew he needed to help!  His Scout spirit kicked in and he dove headfirst into the cold water, grabbed his brother by the arm and swam him to the side of the pool.  He held him there while calling to his Sister to get Mom.  Mom was nearby and quickly arrived at the pool.  She found Jesse sitting in Jonathan's lap coughing, but safe.

Jonathan recalls the incident, "I had a lot of things going through my mind at the time, mostly I was scared, but I had a feeling that I needed to jump in... he didn't have his floaties on.  I was happy to help my little brother."

Jonathan's family & fellow Scouts are so proud of his quick thinking and ability to rescue his brother from harm!  Since that time Jonathan has gone on to earn 5 activity badges, his Faith in God award and qualify for his Webelos badge all in a short 3 months.  Keep up the great work, Jonathan!

IACC Thank You
Central Florida Boy Scouts want to say THANK YOU to the Indian American Community!

If you were downtown on Sunday, January 19th, you may have seen a lot happening near the Amway Center... it was Indian American Day and the Chamber hosted a great party!  Full of dancing, performances, games, and an appearance by Miss America...  and with that, the Indian American Chamber of Commerce invited over 100 Scouts to enjoy the festivities and the Orlando Magic Basketball game that night.

Recently the Central FL Council has also started a partnership with CAPI (The Central FL Association of Physicians from the Indian Subcontinent) promoting healthy living.  Together we are talking to students throughout Central FL on how to select healthy foods, make better choices and stay fit.

Scouting is strong in Central FL because of our community partners... Thank You!

Family Table Time
Council Board Member, Neal Kimball and his wife encourages family dinners, conversation

Jill and Neal Kimball faced the problem of many parents: They were busy with their four kids but didn't feel the family really had time to connect. They decided to change things by focusing on a family dinner, with a twist. They later turned their efforts into a business that encourages other families to use the dining table as a tool for better family life.

Family Table Time touts a once-a-week family meal and meeting, one meant to be fun and low-key but also designed to stimulate real conversation.

Their children, now in their 20s, were ages 5 to 10 when the couple started holding the family meetings, creating a place to share family values and to just share whatever was on their minds.

They started because they were frustrated that between work, school and kids' activities they spent a lot of time together but had little time for real conversations.

"Getting one-word answers from our kids wasn't fun," said Jill Kimball.

The family dinner meeting helped. "It's such an easy fix," she said.

The Kimballs' product is a kit of weekly activities for the year, including character-based conversation starters (January's included resolutions and positive attitudes), agendas and write-on place mats.

Neal Kimball calls them "tools that make it easy for parents and children to really connect."

The couple, who live in Orlando, flew to New York City last month to showcase Family Table Time on Fox & Friends.

Of course, many experts recommend family meals as an important part of family life, one tied not only to healthier eating but also to better grades and to kids who avoid smoking, drinking and doing drugs.

But do families who want to connect over the dinner table need to spend $4.99 a month to do it?

No, of course not.

But the Kimballs say they started marketing Family Table Time after sharing what they were doing with friends, who then clamored for their own set of activities.

The kits are meant for families with school-age children. They also include recipes for health meals and suggestions for physical activities family can do together.

And all of it is meant to be chatted about at the table, together.

Voice of the Scout

Voice of the ScoutIt is Our Scouting Program and we need to Make Our Voices Heard!

Voice of the Scout is the first time in Scouting's hundred plus year history that the Scouts, Scouters, and Parents have been given that opportunity to voice their opinions on Scouting.

We the Scouting Membership are challenged to make a difference and to cause Scouting's success. The Scouting Mission is fluid and change is continually needed to keep Scouting current. Scouting future needs to advance in ways never contemplated in Scouting's past.

The Voice of the Scout is an E-Mail Survey sent out by BSA National twice a year. It is sent to every Scout (under 14 it is sent to the parent to assist in filling it out), every Registered Adult Scouter, and every Scout's Parent. Multiple questions are asked concerning how Scouting is run, it's Membership, its Finance, its Program, and it's Leadership. Scouting's Membership scores each question with a 1 to 10 rating. The responses to the surveys are then collected by BSA National and sent back to every Council coordinated by the respondent's category in Scouting.

From this information the Council's Scouting Program is rated. First the Council is rated on how many contacts are available to survey in relationship to what the total possible is, second the Council is rated on the percentage of responses in relationship to the number of surveys sent out, and third it is rated on its Scouting Program quality by what is called its NPS Score. All of these scores are part of the Council's JTE - Journey to Excellence. For 2013 the Central Florida Council received a JTE rating of Silver.

To reach gold and better the Scouting Program we need to let everyone know how important it is to get their input - to hear their voice and then we need to receive their actual responses - how can we make things better in Scouting without knowing what our Membership wants. Scouting is our Program, our Movement to lead, to plan, and to change. We need to let the Membership know this and make them understand we need them.

Some responses that stood out were - a need for better communications, needed improvement in Volunteer Leadership abilities, more available training opportunities, Council Professional customer service needs to improve, and the new BSA Membership Policy. Overall we beat BSA National in every category but that's not good enough, we want to have the best possible Scouting Program. It belongs to our youth and to us. What can we do to be the best - Change - Change - Change! Make the Scouting Program what we want, what we need, and get everyone involved in the Scouting Program.

Good things have come out of the Voice of the Scout to date - Yes Change! A Council Strategic Plan has been developed to be used by the Council's Leadership. A new Council & Camp website has been created and social media venues - Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumbler, and Instagram information flow was increased. More Training opportunities have been created along with better communication concerning these training opportunities -The Morning Training Briefing. The membership's Bring a Friend Program was started, better Camp Cards have been developed, and more Popcorn Choices were added. Increases in the Scouting Program include a second Camp Pool which is under construction. The Council's Customer Service Area has been redesigned, more Go To Meeting opportunities are available, and new Webinar Trainings were presented. These are only a few of the changes that have been made from the responses collected.

The biggest change of all is that changes are being made, Scouting is advancing, and our membership is getting what it asks for in a timely manner. We've opened Scouting's Eyes to the future. Scouting's Leadership both Volunteer and Professionals have been informed and they have been charged to make changes.

We need to remember that we, the Scouts, the Scouters - plus the Council's Scouting Professionals play a very important role in the Boy Scout Movement. We as a team, working together in unity cause the success for the Central Florida Council's Scouts and the Boy Scout Movement. We grow Membership, we grow Finance, and we grow the Scouting Program. This Team creates Scouting's success and Scouting's sustainability. It's - One Movement, One BSA, United We Grow - That, is our Job.

Advancement News
The Council Advancement Committee would like to remind leaders of the importance of continuously updating advancement information for Units online for all youths on a monthly basis, particularly as we enter a new reporting year. If there is a new Internet Advancement Processor for a unit, an email should be sent to Council Advancement and Training assistant Lynette Dukes requesting that the unit be reset so that they can then go into Internet Advancement as a First Time User and register as the Advancement Processor entering their name, email address, telephone number and a new password so their information will then appear on the Internet Advancement Reports.

Please also be aware that there is a new Eagle Scout Rank Application required as of 1/1/2014. prior to filling out the application, please email Lynette Dukes and she will attach the 2014 Eagle Scout Rank Application to an email to the Scout along with other helpful materials. Again, please contact Lynette BEFORE starting the new form.

Thank you for your continued time and support and the Advancement Committee looks forward to an excellent advancement year!

Training

It's time again for units to begin turning in their applications for Central Florida Council's Excellence in Training Award. The applications and required documentation can be sent to Cindy Miller, CFC Training Chair, at cmill112@hotmail.com (preferred) or training.cfcbsa@gmail.com beginning January 31. The last date applications will be accepted is April 20. If you have not heard about this award and are interested in receiving the requirements and application, please send a request via email to the preferred address noted. This award is a colorful ribbon that can be displayed on your unit's flag, in a Chartered Organization display, a unit display, or in the way that works best for your unit. Show your Scouting youth that adults care about being basic leader trained by encouraging all of the registered adults in your unit, including your Chartered Organization Representative, to complete their basic leader training to qualify for this award. The ribbon and its accompanying certificate will be given to district executives prior to your district's annual recognition banquet late Spring. Please do not ask your DE for the application. It is only available online via Yahoo! groups' CFC training chair's Monday Morning Message or by email request.

In general, the main reasons leaders give for not being trained are the time commitment and the distance in travel to get there. Just about any trained leader will tell you that understanding the basics of the program they are involved in saves them more hours than the training they took to begin with. And, they can tell you that tips and ideas shared by others at the training saved them more research and telephone time. There are 45 basic leader training courses or sessions being offered in Central Florida Council this winter and spring. Training is offered at various locations in different districts - and leaders can register for what they need no matter what district is offering it. Sometimes that means going to training in another district that is closer to home than one in your own district. So, join other leaders in the position you are registered for in other districts to broaden your resource base and make new acquaintances!

The council website will soon have the complete listing of training scheduled for 2014, and into 2015, when pdfs of the training calendar are posted! Once the calendar (or its pages) is added, visit it often for updates.

Central Florida Council Awards Banquet
The annual Central Florida Council and Eagle Scout Recognition banquet is scheduled for Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel near Downtown Disney in Orlando. This is the time of year that we recognize the achievements of our volunteer leaders, the 443 Scouts who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2013 and elect Council Officers and Executive Board members for the year ahead. It is also the time that we recognize the 2013-2014 class of Silver Beavers. The District Award of Merit will be presented at District Banquets scheduled prior to the Council Banquet.
2011 Class of Central Florida Council Eagle Scouts
Silver Beaver AwardThe Boy Scouts of America, acting through the National Court of Honor, may award the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth at the local council level. The award is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by registered Scouters within the jurisdiction of the council.

The District Award of Merit is a council award presented by districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to Scouter who renders service of an outstanding nature at the district level and is made available annually on the basis of 1 award for each 25 traditional units registered in the district.

Nominations for the Silver Beaver Award are due by April 07, 2014. Nomination Forms are available by contacting Shanna Richardson at the Wayne Densch Boy Scout Service Center by email at shanna.richardson@scouting.org.

What's Going Around: Allergic Rhinitis

This time of year, pollen from oak and grasses brings headaches and discomfort to allergy sufferers. Centra Care locations saw a nearly 70% increase in cases of allergic rhinitis last week.  Allergy symptoms get worse with dry, breezy conditions that disperse the pollen particles through the air, so watch out this weekend, as that is exactly what the weather forecast is showing.

LEARN MORE:
Symptoms of allergies often mimic those of a cold -- sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and lots of sneezing. Itchy eyes are a symptom of allergies, but not colds; and fatigue and fever are not allergy symptoms.

There are over the counter and prescription medications available to bring relief to allergy sufferers.

Antihistamines:
Antihistamines can relieve mild to moderate symptoms and are available both over the counter and by prescription.

Corticosteroids Nasal Sprays:
These prescription nasal sprays are a very effective treatment for allergic rhinitis.

Decongestants:
Decongestants can help reduce symptoms such as nasal congestion. Nasal spray decongestants should not be used for more than 3 days.
Saline nasal spray or irrigation can give temporary relief for congestion.

Allergy Shots:
Allergy shots may be recommended for unavoidable allergens that produce hard to control symptoms. They can make your immune system less sesnitive to allergens.

Central Florida Council History in Development

From our Scout Executive

For more than a century, the Scouting program has been guided by its founding principles articulated in the Scout Oath and Law, while at the same time remaining on the cutting edge as society, culture and technology evolves. In order to grow and remain relevant in the lives of families in this age of instant communication the Boy Scouts of America developed method to better understand the challenges families are encountering at a time where there are so many demands on their time and programs to choose from that meet their needs. The "Voice of the Scout" is a tool that helps us measure whether we are responding effectively to their needs. I consistently monitor the comments revealed in the surveys because as Scout Executive it is my responsibility to ensure the product we are delivering is fulfilling the promise we make to the families we serve.  Although our Charter Partners, the organizations who sponsor a Pack or Troop, consistently tell us that the Scouting program is consistent with their objectives of developing the character and moral values of the youth they serve, the surveys also revealed that the volunteers directly serving our youth members feel they need more support from our council staff and senior leadership to help them more effectively deliver the promise of Scouting.

As the adage goes, "the buck stops with me" as your Scout Executive.  Through effective communication, together we can improve the satisfaction or our customer. This is why I value this effective tool.  However, the survey only reaches a sample of about 10% of our adult leaders, therefore I ask you to personally share your thoughts and concerns directly to me by email at ron.oats@cflscouting.org.  Thank you for all you do to make Scouting the best youth serving program in America today!

Thank you for all you do for Scouting.

Yours in Scouting,

Ron Oats
