New BSA National President-elect
Robert M Gates, new BSA President-electI am pleased to announce that the BSA National Executive Board has elected former Secretary of Defense and former CIA Director Dr. Robert M. Gates to the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Gates will serve as a member of the board's executive committee and as the national president-elect. Gates' appointment was made upon the recommendation of national volunteer and professional leaders including the BSA national nominating committee.

This move means that upon approval of voting members of the National Council, Dr. Gates would begin a two-year term as the BSA national president In May 2014. Following the National Council's approval of Dr. Gates' two-year term as the BSA national president beginning in May 2014, Randall Stephenson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Inc., has agreed to serve as the president-elect of the BSA.

I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Gates on a number of occasions. and I can say he is one of our nation's most respected public servants and a proven leader of the highest caliber. Plus. he has a deep. personal devotion to Scouting. He is a past member of the National Executive Board.past president of the National Eagle Scout Association, a distinguished Eagle Scout, and recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award-the highest recognition bestowed by the BSA for extraordinary service to youth.

For any organization, but especially the BSA, to be successful, it's Important to provide strong leaders to guide and motivate its members to achieve their mission and contribute to growth. As a long-time Scouting professional, I have always respected our process for cultivating terrific leaders, especially for our volunteer leadership. Our succession plan for those important roles calls for fresh leaders to rotate on a regular basis, allowing for opportunities to bring in new ideas to keep Scouting ahead of the curve in our service to America's youth.

The process for Dr. Gates' appointment is a great example of how thoughtful, strategic succession planning can help organizations sustain a strong leadership base. Scouting's future is in great hands with the path laid by Wayne Perry as national president and the strength and vision of our upcoming leaders.

Please join me in welcoming Dr.Gates to the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board. Thank you for all you do for Scouting and the youth we serve.

Scouting for Food
Nemours Children's Hospital

Scouting For Food is here!

On Saturday November 2nd, Scouting for Food bags will be distributed to more than 700,000 homes in Central Florida.

A week later on November 9th, scouts will be back to collect those bags as we try to collect more than 600,000 pounds of food for those in need just before the holidays.

Bags should be picked up between 9:00-11:30 AM and delivered to one of our collection sites.

As the largest service project we do as scouts in Central Florida, we want to thank Nemours Children's Hospital for being our title sponsor for the campaign, Winn Dixie for the bags, Second Harvest Food Bank for their support, and also keep an eye out on Brighthouse Networks for our Scouting For Food PSA's over the next three weeks!

Scouts have done a great job selling popcorn to friends and family, in their neighborhoods, at show-and-sells and online.

Units place their final order by November 1st, pick up their final order the weekend of November 16th, order prizes by November 16th and they settle up their popcorn balance by December 6th.

Online Advancement Reporting
As the Council moves through another successful cub and scout registration period this fall, the Council Advancement Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank Units and their leaders for their advancement reporting efforts to register the new youths, and to remind leaders of the importance of continuously updating advancement information for Units online for all youths on a monthly basis. This information is hugely important to the Council and is used to better serve Districts and individual units; and further, the National Office monitors CFCBSA on whether Units complete their monthly reporting and assesses a completion percentage on which the Council is graded. So far for 2013-14, CFCBSA is currently at "Silver" status, which is an improvement from this time last year, but the Council is aiming for "Gold" and needs the participation of all Units to reach that goal.

For those Units and leaders new to advancement, there are are resources available on the national website explaining how to complete reporting titled "Getting the Most from Internet Advancement" available at Scouting.org, and if a Unit needs to initiate advancement reporting access or reset old information, please contact Council Advancement and Training assistant Lynette Dukes at [email protected]. Also, the Committee would like to remind scouts to email Lynette BEFORE completing and filing Eagle Application to ensure the scout's application is correct and has all required attachments.

Thank you for your continued time and support and the Advancement Committee looks forward to an excellent reporting year!

What kind of memorabilia you might ask? Well, let me tell you that you will see anything and everything scouting related at the Sunshine TOR. Why are we in Scouting?

We as Scouts or Scouters (Adult Volunteers) almost all join Scouting for the same reason the Adventure but quickly fine that the Scouting Adventure offers a wide variety of reasons to be involved.

Camping, Hiking, Mountain Climbing,

Biking, Aquatics like Swimming and Canoeing, multiple Learning Venues, Leadership Development, Shooting Sports like BBs, Rifle, Shotgun, and Archery, Fellowship and Friendships, Community Involvement, Sports and Games, Travel Opportunities, Historical Discovery, and FUN! Just to name a few of the opportunities.

These varied and endless opportunities are what provides the Boy Scouts of America Movement's sustainability and causes its longevity. The Central Florida Council includes over 25,000 Tradition Scouts and thousands of Scouters (Adult Volunteers) who are actively part of this great Movement and are living the Scouting Life daily with their beliefs in the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

We the Scouters (Adult Volunteers) became involved for the Adventure and its Fun but soon found our Calling - Leading, Developing, and Teaching the Scouting Adventure to the Scouts and other Scouters. We as the Scouter Team, the Adult Volunteers, grow Scouting's Membership Ranks, grow Scouting's Financial Strengths, and grow the Scouting Program - the Advancement Opportunities, the opportunities provided for Camping and Activities, the Training Programs for both Youth and Adults, and the Leadership Opportunities also for both Youth and Adults.

We as Scouters cause the Success, the Sustainability, and the Longevity of the Scouting Movement.

Support the Scouting program AND Save Money on Summer Camp & Day Camp!!

In order to better serve our Scouting programs, the 2014 Friends of Scouting (FOS) Campaign will launch in October of 2013. Our units will be given the opportunity to set their FOS presentation dates at the October Round Table. The district FOS chair and FOS presenters will be at the October Round Table to answer any questions you may have. Our focus will be to visit each Troop's Court of Honor between October and December and then wrap-up the Blue & Gold visits for our Packs between January and March.

Incentives for participating are numerous:
* Unit service
* Free Basic Leader Training
* Youth scholarships
* Recruitment efforts
* Marketing
* Program development
* Program support
* Affordable Camping
* Support Center
* Camping Facilities
* ...and much more.

In addition, for the 2014 FOS Campaign, Summer Camp and Day Camp Incentives are being established to encourage each Scouting family to participate in the 2014 FOS Campaign. The incentives will be based on a unit hitting their 2014 FOS Goal. Goals will be determined based on the youth members of a unit. Goals will also take into consideration the actual council cost to place one youth through the Scouting program for one year, $150. Combined, these stats will determine a units FOS goal. Here is how it will work:

Goals will be given to the units at the October Round Table.

Goal Setting for Units:
- For Troops -75% of their registered membership x $75 (1/2 a scout for one year) = Goal
- If a Troop hits this goal each family in that unit gets 10% off their Lanoche Summer Camp fee. (Incentive only applies to Lanoche Summer Camp)
- For Packs -75% of their registered membership x $50 = Goal
- If a Pack hits this goal each family in that unit gets 10% off each of their youth's Cub Scout Day Camp fee.

We are excited about the incentives that will save families a significant amount of money for Summer Camp and Day Camp!!
Hispanic Heritage Luncheon
The Hispanic Initiative of the Central Florida Council held its Sixth annual Hispanic Heritage Luncheon on October 27th 2013 at the Embassy Suites in Downtown Orlando.  The event was phenomenal.  Congressman Pete Sessions joined us live from D.C. on Skype and his wife was personally in attendance at our event as speakers.

Ybeth Bruzual, Channel 13 news anchor, was our honoree and many in the community showed up to show their support for a champion of youth in the community.  The event raised over $30,000 for Hispanic Youth in Scouting here in
Central Florida.

The funds that we raise from the Hispanic Luncheon we are able to support the 10 Hispanic Initiative units as well as over 4200 Hispanic Scouts that are in
Central Florida.  We also started the Jim Melillo Hispanic Service Award which allowed three scouts to go to camp over the summer.  This award will now enable many other youth without the opportunity to go and experience camp and all that scouting has to offer.
2013 Whitney M. Young, Jr Service Award Luncheon

The 2013 Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award Luncheon was held on Friday, October 18th at the Orlando Airport Marriott.

More than 200-people attended the event, which supports Central Florida's Scout-Reach program.

Led by title sponsor McCoy Federal Credit Union, nearly $50,000 was raised to help thousands of at-risk Scouts with uniforms, books and camperships.

The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award is named for the late civil rights leader and recognizes outstanding service by an individual in the development of Scouting for culturally and economically diverse youth. This year's recipients include John Beacham, Sarah Milton and Michael Scott.

Pictured from left to right are: Stewart Moore from WESH 2 News who served as emcee, Doug Hollis of Hollis Enterprises, who served as Luncheon Chairman and serves as the Vice President of Scout-Reach, award recepients, John Beacham, Michael Scott, Sarah Milton, Dorian Boyland of Boyland Auto Group, the event's keynote speaker and our Executive Director, Ron Oats.
Ready ... Aim ... Fire!

The 7th Annual Boy Scout Sporting Clays Invitational was a great success for Scouting in Central Florida!!  Lead by Chairman Richard Haines and his team, the event hosted over 140 participants and raised more than $120,000 for Scouting programs throughout the Central Florida Council.

A great big "Thank You" goes out to our Title Sponsor BB&T Bank for hosting the event at Quail Creek Plantation and to our Platinum Sponsor Kel-Tec, Inc. for providing our eye protection and hosting the Flurry Shoot.  Everyone had an excellent time and we hope to see everyone back again next year!

What's Going Around: Pediatric Pneumonia
Pediatric Pneumonia
Click to play this video

Last week, Centra Care locations saw a 125% increase in pediatric cases of pneumonia.

Pneumonia refers to an infection of the lungs, which can be caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites.

Most pediatric pneumonia cases are caused by viruses, including the flu, RSV and parainfluenza virus (which causes croup).

Learn More

Pneumonia often begins after an upper respiratory infection, with symptoms starting during the 2nd or 3rd day of a cold or sore throat.

Pneumonia can be easily diagnosed with a chest x-ray. While it is a relatively common infection of the lungs, it can be dangerous.  It is the leading cause of death from infection. The most common cases of pneumonia (known as "walking pneumonia") can be treated with antibiotics at home, but depending on the severity, a person may need to be hospitalized.

Symptoms of Pneumonia include:

  • Fever
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Shallow & Fast Breathing
  • Coughing (which may include mucus)
  • Sweating & Chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle Aches
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Fatigue

The symptoms of pneumonia often mimic other illnesses like asthma and bronchitis, so people often wait before seeking medical care. This is a mistake, as developed pneumonia can cause severe symptoms and complications.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a pneumonia vaccine for all people age 65 and older.
From Our Scout Executive
"Just do something to help the other fellow, and the joy of the service well done will be its own reward." - Lord Robert Baden-Powell

At the very heart of the Boy Scout Movement is the friendly Good Turn. It might even be called the motive power of the Movement and because it is so essential to the boy, to the organization, and to society in general.

My thoughts turn to friends and family during the approaching Holiday Season. It is heart-warming to know that thousands of Central Florida families will be able to share together the comfort and joy of Thanksgiving because of the efforts of our Scouts during the annual Scouting for Food campaign.

More than 15,000 Boy Scouts and volunteers across the council will canvass the streets of Central Florida delivering 750,000 bags to homes Saturday morning, November 2nd. Residents are asked to fill the Winn-Dixie bags with non-perishable food and canned goods and leave the bags outside their door by 8:00am, Saturday November 9th, for pick-up later in the morning. Scouts will retrieve the bags and deliver them to Winn-Dixie Stores, which are serving as the collection points throughout the area. Families who don't receive a bag can participate in Scouting for Food by dropping off non-perishable food items by visiting any Winn-Dixie location from November 2nd through November 9th. You may also purchase pre-bagged contributions at the checkout counter.

Scouting for Food is the largest service project conducted by the Boy Scouts of America in Central Florida. "Scouting for Food" collections will provide more than 450,000 meals for Central Florida families in need during the critical holiday season when many children and adults will go hungry. For some food pantries, "Scouting for Food" is the primary source of their food stock from November through March. All the food collected stays in the community and is distributed at no cost to food banks, with more than 60 percent of the individuals who receive food are children. So in essence Scouting for Food results in children helping children.

I am thankful for Nemours Children's Hospital and CEO Roger Oxendale for his leadership as the Chair of our Scouting for Food drive. I would also like to thank Winn-Dixie Stores and Bright House Networks for their support of this community "good turn" and join them in extending God's blessing to you and your family on Thanksgiving Day!

Yours in Scouting,

Ron Oats
