Kynndarrn Williamson, Eagle Scout
Kynndarrn grew up in Brevard County and just as he became a teenager he had a choice to make... join the gangs and drug scene as so many others from his neighborhood were doing, or join the Scouts. And so, Kynndarrn became a Scout! He stepped up, advanced and learned many life skills that are so valuable to him today. He went camping, became a leader and earned 35+ merit badges.
He also had a really cool experience with the Central Florida Council. Many of you will recognize him from our community billboards!

|
Kynndarrn achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in May of 2009, just before his 18th birthday. He now serves in the US Navy, at the age of 21. As an airman, Kynndarrn is on his second deployment aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Kynndarrn is one example of so many of our Scouts throughout Central Florida and across the United States. Compared to men who were never in Scouting, Eagle Scouts:
- Exhibit a higher sense of responsibility to give back through volunteering & donating
- Develop a greater connection & concern for their community
- Exercise more self-discipline to plan ahead and set and achieve goals
- Hold higher self-expectations
- Demonstrate greater appreciation & concern for the environment
- Display increased respect for religion & religious diversity
- Establish greater lifelong connections to family, friends & neighbors

When you give to Scouting, you help make heroes...
When you give to Scouting, you help make heroes...
Will Brabb, a Webelos Scout from Pack 507 in Lake Mary, enjoys volunteering at the Sanford Civic Center to help feed the homeless. At 10-years-old, he was amazed to see classmates from his school there to receive help. He says he "really wants to help a lot of people."
Jarrett Slade, a First Class Scout with Troop 54 in Holly Hill, has been awarded the BSA Lifesaving Award for heroism. Not too long after earning the First Aid Merit Badge, Jarrett walked into his home and recognized his father was showing signs of a heart attack or a stroke. He immediately called 911 and took his father's blood pressure, relaying the information to the 911 operator. He also helped explain to the fire fighter's his father's medical history. His father was having a heart attack, but survived thanks to his sons' quick actions.
We need your support to help us make more heroes like Will & Jarrett! It's not too late to pledge your gift and help us!
Go online to http://support.cflscouting.org to help make a hero ... My Pledge to Making Heroes
On behalf of the over 25,000 Scouts here in Central Florida, thank you for being a part of this important campaign!! Thank you for making heroes!!

Central Florida Council Awards Banquet
The Central Florida Council Recognition Banquet will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel & Spa. With over 800 attendees expected, this event will celebrate the 2012 Duane Fogg Class of Eagle Scouts and the 2012 Dr. Wes Estey class of Silver Beavers.
In 2012, there were 488 Scouts in Central Florida who earned the rank of Eagle Scout which is the largest total in the history of the Council.
The Silver Beaver is the highest honor a local council can bestow upon an individual. Each year, a selection committee reviews nominations from throughout the council and selects those most worthy of recognition. The council is afforded one Silver Beaver for every 30 units or fraction thereof. Fourteen individuals will be presented with the Silver Beaver at the Council Banquet on June 4th. Each year, a distinguished Silver Beaver is selected to be the class honoree. The honoree is a volunteer who has already received the Silver Beaver and continued their service to Scouting and the Central Florida Council in a way deserving of special recognition.
Registration is now open. Please register as soon as possible on the Central Florida web site.

Ideal Year of Scouting
What is an "Ideal Year of Scouting?" You may have heard that phrase and wondered what it means. Simply put, it's what you think of when you close your eyes and think of your perfect Scouting year. What do your Scouts see when they do that or your other unit leaders? We want to help you find out!
Your District will be holding an "Ideal Year of Scouting" Seminar at your May Roundtable. You won't want to miss this! Every unit will be provided tools to help them plan out their ideal year.
Why is this important? The top reasons families leave Scouting? Lack of communication, lack of planning, unexciting program, no fun. What's the best way to fight that? Communicate, plan and have fun! And the "Ideal Year of Scouting" seminar will help you do that. See you at the May Roundtable!

What's Going Around: STREP THROAT

Strep Throat is What's Going Around this week. Because bacteria is to blame, confirmed cases of Strep are most often treated with prescription antibiotics. Besides leading to serious complications, if left untreated, a person with Strep can remain contagious for upwards of three weeks - even if symptoms no longer remain.
Centra Care data shows that the number of Strep cases has been increasing over the past two weeks, which is not common for this time of year.
Strep Throat affects both children and adults. The infection is easily spread by person-to-person contact with nasal secretions or saliva. It takes 2 - 5 days after being exposed to the bacteria that causes Strep to experience symptoms.
Symptoms of Strep usually begin suddenly. The sore throat can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by other symptoms including:
- Fever that begins suddenly Red throat, sometimes with white patches
- General discomfort or ill feeling
- Loss of appetite
- Tender, swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Difficulty swallowing
- Stomach ache
- Nausea
- Chills
- Headache
So how do you know if your sore throat warrants a trip to the doctor? According to the CDC you should seek medical care if you or your child has:
A sore throat that lasts longer than 1 weekDifficulty swallowing or breathingExcessive drooling (young children)Temperature higher than 100.4° F Pus on the back of the throatRashHoarseness for more than 2 weeksBlood in saliva or phlegmSymptoms of dehydrationRecurring sore throats Only a physician can diagnose Strep by examining you and conducting tests. It's a myth that white spots in the back of your throat are a positive determination for Strep Throat. Treatment with antibiotics will clear the infection and also help to reduce complications.
Did you know ... Centra Care offers discounted physicals for Scouts and Leaders? Scout physicals are available for $25 and Leader physicals are only $40. Check with your local Centra Care for your next annual physical.

Don't Judge a Hero by the size of his cape!
This is a slogan we have been hearing all over the council since January 1st, and along the way, we have met some outstanding heroes for Central Florida Scouting.
If you attended a Golden Eagle Dinner, you got to hear about some outstanding Scouts - those who have helped feed the hungry, volunteered to serve the homeless, put out fires, helped save the lives of Scout Leaders & parents. Truly Amazing Scouts! This year, we also recognized many of our community heroes, too. The individuals selected to be honored with the Golden Eagle Award were selected by their peers for their community impact... whether they know it or not, they live their lives similar to the Scout Oath and Law and are truly heroes in our book! Here is a list of the Heroes we honored this year! In Apopka... Lou Habner, Lou Habner Realty
In Brevard County... Lynda Weatherman, EDC of FL Space Coast In East Volusia County... Joie Chitwood, III, Daytona International Speedway In Flagler County... Sam Cline, S.E. Jimmy Hewitt, Founder of the Orlando Magic In Osceola County... the Rotary Clubs of Osceola County In Seminole County... Larry Tobin, Fairwinds Credit Union In Southeast Volusia County... Oats, L. Weatherman, Cub Scout Max & G. Mikitarian And last, but certainly not least, we recognize and THANK YOU for being a Scouting Hero! Many of you gave a financial gift to the Scouts at one of the Golden Eagle events. We cannot continue our programs without your help... and together we have raised over $1.7 million for the Scouts of Central Florida!

From the Council President
I am an Eagle Scout. From Bobcat to Eagle I grew up in Scouting. My son is a Webelos. One day I hope I can say that from Tiger to Eagle he grew up in Scouting. In my 43 years in Scouting I have never heard a boy raise the issue of homosexuality at any Den, Pack, Patrol, Troop, or Post meeting. I have never heard the subject raised in any campout, merit badge session, or training session. Go to any Pack or Troop meeting and you'll hear the boys talking excitedly about what boys have always talked about: how fast or cool their Pinewood Derby car is, how much fun they had rock climbing or kayaking on their last outing, or how much they cannot wait to go camping next week or to the National Jamboree or Philmont this summer. If we're entirely candid we'll admit that we're also apt to find them laughing at some silly joke or gross thing one of them just did to get a laugh. In short, they are boys being boys and acting as boys have acted since time immemorial. I only point this out to illustrate that the membership standards issue which has consumed the national leadership of Scouting for months is of no interest to the boys we serve, nor should it be. And if the lack of discussion at the Pack and Troop level is any indication, nor is it of any interest to the vast majority of our volunteer leaders. I hope we will all keep this in mind as the membership standards issue finally comes to a vote and, I hope, a conclusion next month. I say this because I have received emails from people around the country on both sides of the issue threatening to withdraw their support from Scouting if the vote does not go their way. This saddens me because I believe those making the threat have lost sight of what Scouting is really all about - the boys we serve. So as we work our way through this difficult issue let's all try to remember why we're involved in Scouting in the first place. For most of us that is because we know no other organization or movement imparts the values we cherish, the values reflected in the Scout Oath and Law, to the boys of our country as well as Scouting does. That will not change after the membership standards vote, no matter which way the vote goes. Yours in Scouting,
Bill Sublette President, Central Florida Council, BSA
