Local Scout drives in BSA-sponsored NASCAR Race car to school

Scout gets a NASCAR ride to school

Local Boy Scout Daniel Bolan had the opportunity of a lifetime on February 20, 2013.  Getting ready to go to school is a very mundane process for must students.  But for one local Central Florida Boy Scout one morning was a little extra ordinary.  Daniel Bolan got to ride in a racecar to school!  He was driven by NASCAR driver Scott Lagasse Jr., in the BSA/Hybrid Light car.  Daniel was selected for this opportunity because he was the top seller in camp cards in 2012, selling 1,000 cards!

The BSA Racing Team and NASCAR driver Scott Lagasse Jr. are anticipating a great 2013 NASCAR season.  Make sure and watch the BSA Racing team and NASCAR driver Scott Lagasse Jr. race throughout the season in the hunt for the checkered flag!

Change - It's Your Choice - It's Your Program
Voice of the Scout

You choose your Scouting Adventure by using your voice - the Voice of the Scout! Yes, you get to say what you like about the Scouting Program and what you think needs improvement. The Boy Scouts of America created the Voice of the Scout Program in the spring of 2012 and have asked for your participation and input through the e-mailed survey both last spring and this past fall. Your responses have made an impact and caused - Change.

The survey results were reviewed by both the Central Florida Council's Volunteer and Professional Leadership Teams. Leadership is listening to your voice, continuing what you like about the Scouting Program and changing what you thought needed to be improved on. Thank you for your help in making the best Scouting Program possible.

Please respond to the 2013 Spring Voice of the Scout Surveythat you will be receiving in Mid-March. We need your Voice!

Calling all Scouting Families to Action ...
Scouting Activities New youth, new families, new leaders all make Scouting stronger, more fun and exciting!!  During the month of March we are asking each family that is already enjoying the journey of scouting to invite another family to join the experience.  Reach out to a family that you know and get them to join Scouting.

A great way to introduce a family to Scouting is to invite them to your next activity, camping, Pinewood Derby, Pack Meeting, Court of Honor ...  Share the fun!!!

The Orlando Solar Bears put on their Scout hockey uniforms to do battle with the Reading Royals on March 2nd at the Amway Center.  Each Orlando Solar Bear Hockey player battled on the ice with special Boy Scout jerseys.  Hundreds upon hundreds of local Scouts packed the Amway Center to cheer for their Solar Bears.  Scouts in uniform received a special Orlando Solar Bear Scout patch and special Orlando Solar Bear hockey puck.
Table Talk
Table Talk You are part of the Scouting Family and scouting needs to be part of your Family. Yes Scouting is a family thing, it doesn't belong to just the Scout. Scouting should involve the entire family in its adventures. It should be family table talk in your home providing unmatchable quality family time. Where and how can the entire family be involved in Scouting you ask?

The whole family can be involved in most Scouting Events and Activities with the Scout

The whole family can help in the planning, give the needed guidance, and provide the education needed for the Scout's success

Parents, Grandparents, and Guardians can become part of the Pack, Troop, or Crew's Leadership

Most importantly is that the family needs to be enthusiastic about Scouting and give the family's support needed for the Scout's success

Sometimes the family just needs to be there for that little extra push for the Scout to get to the next step in their Scouting Adventure.

Success! Yes your involvement will cause success and growth for your Scout in the Scouting Program.  You'll find it's a rewarding and satisfying feeling for both you and your Scout when you are involved as part of their Scouting Adventure.

The Scout will:Seek more new and exciting Adventures

Have greater and more Advancements

Play a more active role and becoming involved in more Activities and Events

Will Grow in Leadership and be more Responsible

Seek out and enjoy learning new abilities

Family involvement also causes your Scout's longevity in the Scouting Program - Yes the Scout will stay involved in Scouting longer. The Scout's Scouting Adventure will build with success stories and lifelong memories, your involvement will create smiles.

Become involved then Step back and watch your Scout grow, become a leader, and succeed.

Cub Scout Day Camp 2013
2013 Day Camp
Cub Scout Day CampCub Scout Day Camp planning has kicked into full force.  The Directors, program directors and other key staff are putting together the best program ever. The theme this year is Cub Scout Day Camp discovers the world.  Each camp is discovering different things in the world.  From the different types of transportation you can take to discover the world, to all the different countries in the world.

WE are looking for volunteers to work at camp and to help plan it as well.  If you are interested contact your camp director on the flier or at cflscouting.org on the Day Camp page.

Cub Scout Day Camp We have some great new activities planned, some old favorites (BB's and archery).  Day Camp is the opportunity for Cub Scouts, to have fun making new friends, learning scout skills, all while earning rank advancement and other Cub Scout awards.  Each camp is different and your son can attend any or as many camps as he wants.  Most camps will have BB's, Archery, Crafts and Scout Skills after that every camp is different.  You son will earn awards in his new rank Wolf, Bear or Webelos.  He will earn a Day Camp patch and receive his camp t-shirt.  Camp is all week and all day long.  For specific times and dates check out the flier or website.

Congratulations to Cub Scout Jonathan B. for the winning patch design.  He and a friend are getting an all-expense paid vacation for two for the Cub Scout Day Camp of his choice.  So mark your calendars with the dates and get ready for a wonderful Day Camp filled summer.

Exploring: "What's in Your Future?"
Exploring:
Exploring: "What's in your future"
Career Exploring is a unique career exploration program for young men and women ages 14-20. It provides students with an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in those fields. You get hands-on experience to determine whether or not a particular career field is right for you. You develop valuable networking contacts with professionals working in your selected career fields, and you get to know other teenagers and young adults sharing your same interests and aspirations.

Exploring can be the first step in identifying career possibilities while having fun in an exciting and informal environment. Career Exploring is all about helping young adults make a more informed decision about future careers and determine if a particular career is the right one for them. The goal is to expand the Career Exploring program to offer a variety of different career program to choose from in Central Florida.

To make this happen it involves the following components. 1) Building relationships with local high schools to survey youth on their career interest. An example of the survey is included in this link . 2) When the top career interests are determined appointments are made with a company in the specific career field to sponsor a program for our youth. 3) A letter from the company sponsoring the program regarding an open house date when the youth can sign up.

If you know a youth interested in a specific career program or a company that may sponsor a program contact Jerry Brady. Jerry can be reached at jbrady@lflmail.org or 407-703-0233. Check out the video above that talks about the Exploring program

Central Florida 2013 Camp Card and Scout Show

The 2013 Camp Card Campaign has been launched!  This year we produced two (2) cards:

2013 Camp Card A
Card A: with Publix as a one-time use snap off (effective only in Brevard, Flagler, Orange, Seminole & Volusia counties).  Publix did not extend the offer to Lake and Osceola counties.

2013 Camp Card B

Card B - with Bass Pro Shop as a one-time use snap off (designed specifically for Lake & Osceola counties).

Both cards have four (4) one-time snap off offers. The Camp Card is more attractive with added value. With these new developments, the 2013 Camp Card is going to be the best ever!

This initiative is a fundraiser designed to help Scouts earn their way to a Summer/Day Camp program.

We are excited about the opportunities that are provided to the local Scout Units with this "risk free" Council approved fundraising opportunity. There is a lot of positive buzz about these cards from our volunteers!

The Camp Cards have been distributed to Units at the February Roundtables.

Units will set up show and sells at various locations around town and sell the cards through families and friends up until the Scout Show on April 27th.

The Central Florida Scout Show is being held at the University of Central Florida on Saturday, April 27th at the Brighthouse Networks Stadium. Turner Wallis of Johnson's Surveying Company is the Scout Show Event Chair for a second time. We are excited about this year's show.... We are anticipating over 14,000 in attendance with participation from over 450 units throughout our Council. We are thankful for McDonald's support as the title sponsor for this event.
Currently, we are securing vendors who are interested in promoting their company or organization with us at the Central Florida Scout Show. The Scout Show Committee is promoting an active marketing campaign to draw additional awareness of the Scout Show.
  • 310,000 Discount Cards are being sold by our Scouts
  • Interactive website where more information can be promoted to our sponsors
  • Targeting a broader market with event flyers, radio spots and additional media coverage
Vendors interested in attending should provide their point of contact name, phone number, and e-mail address to Kirk Clark, Development Director - Central Florida Council at kirk.clark@cflscouting.org or by phone at (407) 703-0230. Thank you for your support!

What's Going Around: Gastroenteritis
What's Going Around ...

You may have seen news stories lately about Norovirus, a virus that can cause Gastroenteritis (stomach flu).  In fact, case numbers got so high around the country that the CDC issued warnings.  Through the first several weeks of 2013, Centra Care physicians saw a steady number of patients suffering from Gastroenteritis, but nothing out of the ordinary.  That is, until this past week, when the number of cases took a big increase.  And signs point to Norovirus as the probable cause.

Learn More:

Norovirus is a very contagious virus. Contracted from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces, the virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed (acute Gastroenteritis). This leads to stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting

Anyone can be infected with Norovirus and get sick.  And you can have a Norovirus illness many times in your life. It can be serious, especially for young children and older adults.

Norovirus is the most common cause of acute Gastroenteritis in the United States. Each year, it causes about 21 million illnesses and contributes to about 70,000 hospitalizations and 800 deaths.  Norovirus is also the most common cause of foodborne-disease outbreaks in the United States.

(Source: CDC)

Beware, Gastroenteritis often leads to dehydration.  So watch out for symptoms, including:  decreased urination, extreme lethargy and light-headedness.

To prevent a new infection, wash your hands frequently, and do not share beverages or eating utensils.  If it's a child who is ill, parents need to be diligent about hand washing, especially after using the bathroom, handling diapers and when handling or preparing food.

Here are a few recommendations if you or your child has Gastroenteritis:

  • Stay hydrated.  Drink plenty of clear liquids like water, sport drinks (for adults), and pediatric electrolyte solutions like Pedialyte.  But don't drink too much at one time. It is best to take small frequent sips.
  • See a doctor if unable to keep any fluids down.
  • Avoid dairy, caffeine, and spicy foods until feeling better.
  • Make sure to get plenty of rest.

Gastroenteritis is viral in nature so it can't be treated with antibiotics.  But Centra Care physicians can prescribe medication that can stop the vomiting, slow the diarrhea and prevent dehydration.

From the Council Commissioner
Bo Terry, Council Commissioner

Greetings Central Florida Council Scouts and Scouter's; can you believe it is already March 2013? The New Year is off and running and a lot of exciting things are going on here in the Central Florida Council. I invite you all to attend the upcoming "All Hand's" meeting to be held 0800-1230 Saturday, 23 March at the Bob Carr Performing Arts center in downtown Orlando. This will be the perfect opportunity for you to hear firsthand the "state of Scouting" here in our Council. In addition, we are going to have two very special guests, the National Scout Executive, Wayne Brock as well as the National Commissioner, Tico Perez. It's FREE, so please reserve your spot at: Please click here to reserve your spot.

As you already know, Camp Cards are on the street. I ask that you fully support this worthy program as it provides revenue that facilitates the great program that we enjoy here in our area. It is also the time of the Districts Golden Eagle dinners; please support those events as they too are critical to the Districts ability to operate. OK, enough about fundraising.

Adult volunteers, what training have you taken lately? We owe it to the youth that participate in this great program that we are not only trained in Youth protection, but we need to be trained in our specific positions. I challenge all of you to continue to grow your skill set by participating in additional training, to include advanced type training; Wood Badge, Powder Horn, Camp School, etc.

Summer is just around the corner and this year is significant as the 2013 National Jamboree is scheduled to be held 15-24 July at BSA's newest High Adventure Base; The Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. Of course, you don't have to go to West Virginia to have an awesome summer experience. We have one of the finest Summer Camp's in the country right here at Camp Lanoche. In fact, the month of June is already fully booked so if you decide to go local this summer, get your reservations in, ASAP!

OK, it's a busy time in Scouting and I want you to get out and enjoy all that Scouting has to offer and bring a friend. Yes, bring a friend because there are a lot of youth in our communities that we are not serving. Let's get them involved.
In closing, God Bless each and every one of you, thanks for all that you do. Stay safe and I'll see you on the high ground.

Yours in Scouting,

Bo Terry

Council Commissioner
