The raffle is part of the Aug. 29 charity golf scramble benefiting the Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer & Wellness Center. Raffle tickets are $20 each. Rounds of golf at various Michigan courses will also be given away, including Falcon Head Golf Club, Big Rapids; Canadian Lakes Country Club, Canadian Lakes; Moss Ridge Golf Club, Ravenna; Stonegate Golf Club, Twin Lake; and Crestview Golf Club, Kalamazoo. Tickets will be drawn at the conclusion of the scramble, and you do not need to be present to win. For more information or to purchase a ticket, please contact Nicole Barfell.

Schedule your skin cancer screening

Southwest Michigan Dermatology will be in the Cassopolis office on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. to conduct skin cancer screenings for Cass, Gobles and Paw Paw employees. The wellness committee is working with a local dermatologist to provide and schedule screenings for Adrian employees. Watch for more information.

A skin cancer screening is a visual inspection of your skin by a medical professional. No blood work is conducted. You can choose a full-body screening, or just an inspection of exposed areas (face, neck, arms, hands, etc.).

Please contact Glenyce Bentzer or Jenna Zache to schedule an appointment.

KUDOS & WORDS OF THANKS TO ...

... Andy Badner and Billy Meggs for taking care of schedules so I could take care of my wife, Mary, as we go through a little setback. Mary also thanks everyone for the lovely flower arrangement that she received. I would like to thank Frank Walker for filling in for me as I had extended time off. We all know how we love on call time! There could never be a more caring place to work than right here at Midwest Energy. Thanks to everyone. (Donn & Mary O'Shinski)

... Gaby Hall, Meghan Tarver, Cassie Sparks and Bobbi Lowe

for spending a part of a recent Saturday with a few thousand other Cass County fairgoers at Midwest Energy's Family Day.  I appreciate your willingness to give up part of your weekend to spread Midwest cheer. Also, big thanks to Stacy and Billy Meggs for assisting with the events of the day and staying after the Backyard Chef contest to help me, even though I know they were ready to call it day. Thank you all. (Lori Ruff)

... Sara Hartsell, Marty Smego and Linda Carango for stepping up to the plate with a recent volunteer effort. Most people disappear when it is time to paint, but these folks happily rolled up their sleeves to paint, tape, sand and clean in helping one of the Strengthening Schools grant award recipients carry through on her project. You guys rock; thank you! (Lori Ruff and Nicole Barfell)

... all employees who made our 2013 Cass County Relay for Life effort a success. To date, Team Midwest has raised more than $5000 to support the local Relay effort. Thanks to everyone for your time, ideas, energy and donations, and special thanks to those who helped cover the track during the 24-hour event. We still have time to turn in money, and more fundraisers will follow, so stay tuned! (Katie Mack)

MIDWEST IN THE COMMUNITY

In April we
awarded $30,018 to 22 schools as part of our inaugural Strengthening Schools Grant Program, provided in partnership with Touchstone Energy. One of the recipients was Elizabeth Buckhold, an English and yearbook teacher at Constantine High School. Mrs. Buckhold was awarded a grant of $400 to purchase Idea Paint, a specialty product designed to create a more interactive classroom and enhance the student learning environment. Last week the Strengthening Schools committee of Linda Carango, Sara Hartsell and Marty Smego visited Mrs. Buckhold's classroom to sand, tape and prime classroom surfaces so that she could apply the Idea Paint prior to the start of her school year.
A WORD ON VALUES
Pride in the process of representing our brand
by Meghan Tarver

I know and see everyday that values are active and living among the people of Midwest Energy, but I also have an appreciation as to how our values are reflected in our brand and image. I was asked late last year to be part of a small group to plan and design a new sign for the front lobby areas in our offices. The previous signs were dated and there was interest in creating something new. I was intrigued by the idea and volunteered readily; I loved the idea of being part of something that was going to represent our brand and hang in our offices for years to come. During the process I got to share my thoughts, likes and dislikes. I felt like I was creating my own masterpiece, with the help of others in our group of course, and it was so exciting.

The signs are now hanging and I'm thrilled with the result. The design is innovative, the process was filled with passion, and the product is the result of a team from our own employee community. I'm proud to see our brand hanging in our lobby and to represent that brand and what it stands for everyday. What I look forward to the most is hearing the conversations that will take place and knowing that I was invited to have hand in it!

All Midwest employees are invited to share their personal views of values within our culture. It can be an account of values in action, or how values impact you, your team, our members or life and work in general. By sharing insights and examples, we keep values alive. Email your thoughts to values@teammidwest.com.
