TIPS: Trafficking Interactive Prevention Simulation
Only about two months ago, the leaders of the 4H Trailblazer Group in Ft. Myers and HTAP put their heads together to create a new prevention program for teens.
Using the kids' experience at building exhibits and HTAP's knowledge of human trafficking case studies, TIPS was born and was proudly presented at the Modern Day Slavery Conference held at Hodges University Conference in October.
The exhibit was made of painted refrigerator boxes and a canopy framework. As participants went through the exhibit, students read them scenarios written to describe situations in a high school that could lead to human trafficking. Some participants (in this case, law enforcement and human service professionals) heard the next stage of the case which became human trafficking. All participants were given the opportunity to read what happened in the real cases and to talk to a trained advocate. They were also given a "TIPS" card which lists "Trafficker Techniques Used to Recruit You" and "Trafficking Avoidance Techniques You Can Use". Participants evaluated the experience and their input will help us continue to develop the program so that others may create their own TIPS installations in their communities for students. Meanwhile these 4H kids and their amazing leader, Amy Turner, have been invited to present their installation at a number of awareness and training events all over the state of Florida.
