Yoga Posture
Vrksasana - Tree Posture
Vrksasana
(Tree Posture)

Vrksasana or "Tree Posture" improves axial extension of the spine and balance. You can start with the sole of your foot low, against your opposite ankle. Then, as your balance improves, slide the foot higher up on the standing leg. Experiment & have fun! The more you think like a tree, the easier this posture becomes! (Hint: regular meditation improves balance)

Hope you've had a good summer. I've been busy with an unexpected, but exciting new project - finding, and then remodeling, a new, permanent home for Integrative Mindfulness!

Integrative Mindfulness
The Fountains, Bonita Springs

As I write this, an amazing team (which includes my husband, friends, MBSR graduates, and local contractors) is busy putting up walls, building cabinets, installing lighting fixtures, and window treatments, as well as flooring, paint, and original art! We'll be located in The Fountains Professional Park, 3372 Woods Edge Circle, Suite 102, Bonita Springs.

Much more will be possible in this new space: more teachers, healers, classes, workshops, and guest speakers. Please visit what I hope will be a sanctuary for your life-long learning and practice in the art and science of mindfulness, as well as other contemplative and healing practices.

We will be completing the finishing touches in time for the next scheduled free introductory presentations on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on Sept. 20th. and Sept. 23rd. (See sidebar) The next 8-week cycle of MBSR classes begins Sept. 26th. Stay tuned for more as this dream unfolds!

Mindful Movement
Ed Halliwell

Woman doing yoga with arms It's week three of the mindfulness-based stress reduction courses I'm currently teaching, and that means our main work is mindful movement. It's an interesting week for me as course leader, partly because I don't connect comfortably with some of the movements we practice. Historically, I tend to enjoy moving the body quickly or not at all. So, I love playing football, partly because the pace of the game gives my body a sense of energy and release, and I love lying and resting in the sunshine, which often brings a feeling of letting go and relaxation. Slow movements, like those in Hatha Yoga or gentle walking, on the other hand? My answer used to be: "No, thank you." Read more . . .

Peter Haberl, senior sport psychologist for the U.S. Olympic Committee, teaches mindfulness to the U.S. Olympic team due to the unique distractions present at the Olympic Games. But the rest of us can benefit too. Jump into the pool. Experience the rhythm of your stroke, the comfort of the water holding you up, the rush of the water past your ears.
