I hope this newsletter finds you well. I just returned from a professional training retreat on Mindful Self Compassion (MSC). Just as we can retrain our selves to bring mindful presence to our moment to moment experience, we can also learn, through a variety of experiential practices, to be kinder and more compassionate to ourselves - especially when we're suffering, or make a mistake. Turns out we're much happier and healthier when we practice self-compassion than when we practice being hard on ourselves (contrary to cultural belief!) There's a world of benefits available! And, if you're a geek like me, you'll be interested in the science behind self-compassion.

Kristen Neff, PhD, Huffington Post   Summer Love

A common stumbling block when thinking about self-compassion is the belief that it just means letting ourselves off the hook. When we say "it's only human" isn't this just a way to blow off personal responsibility for our actions? But let's look at this more closely. Read more . . .

I'm enthusiastic about brining some of this knowledge into future Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) classes, as well as offering the full MSC program in the Fall of 2014. Three excellent books on this subject are:

You can access free guided self-compassion meditations here.

And since I'm a work in progress, I'm also excited about participating this summer in a class on the practice of Insight Dialogue, an interpersonal meditation practice which brings the mindfulness and tranquility of meditation directly into our experience with other people. The principles of the practice are:

  • Pause
  • Relax
  • Open
  • Trust Emergence
  • Listen Deeply
  • Speak the Truth

We touch on interpersonal mindfulness in MBSR, but I'm eager to learn (and share) more.

On June 18th from 5:30 - 7 pm join me for the Living Well Series along with Dr. Vivian Ebert of Living Well Chiropractic, and Sue Campanella, Certified Women's Empowerment Coach and Reiki II Practitioner. I would love to see you at one of the Free Guided Meditations on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 - 11 at
