Greetings!

Happy Holidays! Integrative Mindfulness is your local center for the teaching and practice of mindfulness - for optimal health, a refreshed outlook, and a revitalized quality of life. Why not join me on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 - 11 am at the outdoor pavilion at The Brooks Commons Club for a guided mindfulness practice? This weekly practice is being offered free of charge. If you're an Integrative Mindfulness graduate, please join us on Friday afternoons at 3:30 for mindful movement and meditation? Graduates are also invited to join the next Day of Mindfulness Retreat on December 9th.

The next classes in the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction ("MBSR") course will begin in January. Spaces are filling, so register now. Or, register for a free introductory talk (Day or Evening) and get more information.

I'm learning the practice of Qigong from my colleague, Walter Hayley of Dragon's Gate. Qigong leads you into a state of mind that's meditative and focused, and enhances body awareness. I'll also be participating in a personal ten-day silent meditation retreat at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts from Dec. 28- Jan. 6.

Thank you to all the wonderful & transformative people who have joined me on the path of mindfulness during this past year. You are a blessing to me and to the world!

Is 2013 the year to bring mindfulness to your life?

Going Within
Meditation as Medicine
Amy Paturel, Neurology Now

In the spring of 2000, Cassandra Metzger was working as an attorney at the PBS headquarters in Washington, D.C., attending night classes for a master's degree at Johns Hopkins University, and training for her first 10K race. At 34 years of age, her life was full and fast. But during that spring and into the summer, she became unable to get out of bed because of unexplained pain and fatigue. By the fall, she had to stop working. A year later, Metzger was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a disorder of the central nervous system that seems to distort the body's normal response to pain.

Interesting stuff you should know

Colds/Flu
A new study reported in the Anals of Internal Medicine indicates that mindfulness meditation (the practice of focusing on your bodily sensations and thoughts and emotions to achieve a healthier mind-body response to stress) may help reduce your risk of colds and flu. Meditators reported 33% lower incidence, 43% shorter duration, and 60% lesser severity than the control group.

Cravings
A study in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience reports that mindfulness meditation may help you quit cigarettes by decreasing activity in a part of the brain linked to cravings. Experts suggest that meditation may help you break other habits that may be putting you at risk for cancer, like binge drinking and eating fatty comfort foods.

Better Sex
Mindfulness meditation could enhance the insula, a part of the brain linked to awareness. Regular meditation may make it easier to get aroused and even improve orgasms. What's not to love?
