Latest Round of Innovation Grants to Focus on Campus Climate
April 2015: In the latest round of Innovation Grants, the Division of Equity & Inclusion gave over $100,000 to seed 13 project proposals from UC Berkeley students, staff, and faculty. The Innovation Grants were initially funded by the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund to encourage projects that promote a more equitable UC Berkeley campus. This year's round of grants were awarded to proposals designed to directly improve campus climate after the UC-wide Campus Climate Survey revealed that 1 in 4 people at UC Berkeley experienced some form of exclusion, intimidation, bullying, or isolation.
According to Elizabeth Gillis, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Equity & Inclusion, this year the Division sought out and funded more proposals specifically from students. "I'm pleased that in our 2015 round we're funding some incredibly forward-thinking, student-led initiatives that will advance our vision of a more inclusive campus experience," she noted. April 24-26, 2015: The Division of Equity and Inclusion was the key campus supporter of the first Othering & Belonging Conference in Oakland, which was organized by UC Berkeley's Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. Hundreds of attendees came together to connect, examine, and critically discuss how to advance a society built on Belonging, while more deeply understanding the relationships between forms of Othering.
The event featured a series of keynotes and plenary sessions from prominent visionaries and changemakers including Andrew Solomon, bell hooks, Charles Blow, Naomi Klein, Ai-jen Poo, Manuel Pastor, Guillermo Gomez-Pena, Joanna Macy, Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton, Luis Garden Acosta, Lynn Manning, Angela Glover Blackwell, Judith Smith of the AXIS Dance Company, and the Destiny Arts Youth Group. The entire weekend was hosted and facilitated by Shakti Butler.
Many UC Berkeley faculty who are members of the Haas Institute faculty clusters were panelists in the highly popular breakout sessions, including Na'ilah Nasir, Susan Schweik, Russell Robinson, Jonathan Simon, and Rachel Morello-Frosh.
