The Early Academic Outreach Program opened doors for me. With the many challenges I faced through the summer programs, including studying for quizzes or completing my homework on time, the answer to the hardest challenge was not found in a book, but rather in me. EAOP helped me discover the confidence I was hiding within myself the whole time.

I'm an immigrant. I'm older than most students and I'm from a poor family. When I was growing up, I was discriminated against because I was from mainland China, rather than Hong Kong, which was then a part of Britain. That kind of discrimination tilts your vision. For me, it made me push harder to succeed. My goal is to transfer to UC Berkeley in the fall 2012 semester to pursue a future in both clinical and academic research . . . I hope to one day find the cure for cancer. Niwen Kong, San Francisco City College undergraduate, Transfer Alliance Project Summer Research Program. Read more... |
My trajectory from movie-watching boy to graduate student in the UC Berkeley Department of Film and Media was likely spurred by my first movie review written on the terrible Mel Gibson movie "The Patriot." Suddenly, my eighth-grade self realized, "Not only can I watch movies, but I can also tell people what I think of them!" This was my "Eureka!" moment. Fareed Ben-Youssef, UC Berkeley graduate student, Ph.D. program in Film and Media, WorkAbilityIV (WAIV) Program. Read more... |
In a campus as large as UC Berkeley and in a department as big as the Psychology Department, it's very rare, if not impossible, to find the level of support provided by the McNair staff. There is a particular emphasis on preparing us for graduate school in a very holistic manner. For me, my McNair project marks the beginning of this transition, from student to scholar. I was born to two Eritrean refugee parents in Sudan, who escaped the horrors of the longest war in contemporary history. In 1992, when I was three years old, my family and I were granted political asylum to the United States as refugees. As I matured, I began to understand that the challenges faced by my immediate community were only a reflection of a greater struggle experienced by all disadvantaged and unrepresented people around the nation and the globe. My mother is from a small town in Mexico and even though her dream was to continue school, she was not given the opportunity to do so. However, she instilled the love and importance of reading and studying in my siblings and me from a young age . . . I decided to go beyond where my mother could go ---- to fulfill my dreams of learning more about the mysteries of the cosmos.
