Gurpreet Singh

Gurpreet Singh transferred to UC Berkeley from a community college in Sacramento and was selected as a SAGE Scholar.

"When I came to Berkeley, I had a false sense of confidence about my ability to land jobs and internships," says Singh. "SAGE exposed me to leading experts in all kinds of fields. The philosophy of SAGE is learning by experience, and that's why it's so valuable."

SAGE (Student Achievement Guided by Experience) exposes high-achieving, low-income Berkeley students to industry leaders and real-world experiences. Singh graduated in December but is on campus this spring to coordinate the new SAGE Scholars Entrepreneurial Course.

"Initially, we want members of different communities to recognize that at the core, they are very similar and then help them to realize that although they may differ in opinion, they can still coexist to make the Cal community a more healthy one," explains Hassan Shah, a Berkeley sophomore and project organizer. American Cultures finds new ways
to engage

UC Berkeley students will make the community their classroom this spring as part of several new courses that push the pioneering American Cultures program to new ground. The new classes are designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the diverse cultures of the United States with the added twist of community-based, collaborative research known as "engaged scholarship." UC Berkeley's 20-year-old program is getting this shot of innovation thanks to support from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund for 30 new or reinvigorated classes over the next five years. Nasir advances educational equity

Na'ilah Suad Nasir

Associate Professor Na'ilah Suad Nasir is a bright new light on UC Berkeley's faculty who is leading research and teaching in educational equity ---- but she is no stranger to Cal. Nasir was a UC Berkeley undergraduate in the early 1990s, double majoring in social welfare and psychology, mothering her young baby, working 30 hours a week, and earning top grades ---- all before age 21 when UCLA snapped her up into a Ph.D. program. "I was a focused student," she explains with a laugh. Read more...
