Attention K-3 Teachers: Examples of Implementation based on Learning at the Fall Institute with Dr. Nell Duke
Janna Bjork, kindergarten and grade 2 ELL teacher in Perry Community Schools participated in the workshop with Dr. Nell Duke this past September. She has shared with us examples of the implementation of her learning and practices in project-based learning with her kindergarten and second grade students.
Be sure to check out her anchor charts for four projects she has implemented - Our Project, Our Purpose, Our Audience. These charts are based on Duke's Inside Information, page 64.
She has also shared the entire kindergarten plan for Food from Farms, with project phases, Iowa Core Learning Targets, I Can Statements, and Small-Group Work. The I Can statements
are presented for your convenience in a PowerPoint presentation.
Janna has found that project-based instruction with her small-groups of ELL students maximizes her time with them. She finds the project-based approach is "a good framework for incorporating components of reading workshop, writing, workshop, and inquiry." And now she is adding what she learned from Dr. Jay McTighe to guide even more her project planning. ********************************* Janna Bjork is receiving an extended membership for one year for sharing her story on the implementation of project-based learning in her kindergarten and second grade ELL classrooms. Thank you, Janna! If you would like to share your story on implementation of project-based learning, please contact Lou Howell at LouHowell@mediacombb.net. |

How to Create a Culture of Achievement - Fisher, Frey and Pumpian
What does it feel like to walk into your school? Is it a welcoming place, where everyone feels valued? Most school improvement efforts focus on academic goals. But sometimes what can make or break your learning community are the intangibles--the relationships and connections that make up its culture. Authors Fisher, Frey, and Pumpian believe that no school improvement effort will be effective unless school culture is addressed. They identify five pillars that are critical to building a culture of achievement:
- Welcome: Imagine if all staff members in your school considered it their job to make every student, parent, and visitor feel noticed, welcomed, and valued.
- Do no harm: Your school rules should be tools fo
r teaching students to become the moral and ethical citizens you expect them to be. - Choice words: When the language students hear helps them see their own possibility and potential, students perform in ways that are consistent with that language.
- It's never too late to learn: Can you push students to go beyond the minimum needed to get by, to discover what they are capable of achieving?
- Best school in the universe: Is your school the best place to teach and learn?
Drawing on their years of experience in the classroom, the authors explain how these pillars support good teaching and learning. In addition, they provide 19 action research tools that will help you create a culture of achievement, so that your school or classroom is the best it can be.
After reading this book, you'll see why culture makes the difference between a school that enables success for all students and a school that merely houses those students during the school day.
See the book's table of contents and read excerpts.

Iowa ASCD Curriculum Leadership Academy to Host Ken O'Connor and Districts from across the State
Be sure to plan to attend the Curriculum Leadership Academy on April 23-24, Assessing the Core: Grading for Learning
Ken O'Connor will be the key note speaker on April 23. Ken O'Connor, a.k.a. The Grade Doctor, specializes in issues related to the communication of student achievement, especially grading and reporting. Through books and articles, presentations and working with small groups Ken has helped individuals, schools, and school districts to improve communication about student achievement. In 1995 Ken developed eight guidelines for grading, and he has continued to refine those guidelines. In 2007 the same ideas were organized into fifteen fixes for broken grades. He has also designed eleven guidelines for standards-based reporting. He is now generally acknowledged to be one of a small group of leading experts on how to grade and report effectively.
All participants will receive his latest hot-off-the-press book, How to Grade for Learning, K-12.
On April 24, 2015, several districts from across the state will share their stories on transitioning to grading based on the learning and demonstration of the Iowa Core. Matt Townsley, Solon Community School District, will be the final keynote, sharing Solon's story - what worked, what didn't, and what you can do to make grading in your district based on progress in learning and demonstration of the standards!
The early bird fee until April 1 is $250 for Iowa ASCD members and $295 for nonmembers, who will then receive a complimentary membership for one year in Iowa ASCD. Purchase orders with a list of the names and email addresses may be sent to Lou Howell at 2555 Pine Circle, Urbandale, IA 50322.

Book - Role Reversal: Achieving Uncommonly Excellent Results in the Student-Centered Classroom by Mark Barnes
Named one of the best professional books of 2013 by Teacher Librarian
This book is also one of the 30 books available 24/7 in the online opportunity beginning January 1. Want to make your students more responsible for their own learning? Want to create an academic environment in which students thrive and develop a genuine thirst for knowledge? Want to improve your students' standardized test results but avoid a "teach-to-the-test" mentality that throttles creativity and freedom? In this book, Mark Barnes introduces and outlines the Results Only Learning Environment-a place that embraces the final result of learning rather than the traditional methods for arriving at that result. A results-only classroom is rich with individual and cooperative learning activities that help students demonstrate mastery learning on their own terms, without being constrained by standards and pedagogy. By embracing results-only learning, you will be able to transform your classroom into a bustling community of learners in which - Students collaborate daily on a number of long-term, ongoing projects.
- Students receive constant narrative feedback.
- Yearlong projects target learning outcomes more meaningfully than worksheets, homework, tests, and quizzes.
- Freedom and independence are valued over punitive points, percentages, and letter grades.
- Students manage themselves and all but eliminate the need for traditional classroom management.
Learn how your students can take charge of their own achievement in an enjoyable, project-based, workshop setting that challenges them with real-world learning scenarios-and helps them attain uncommonly excellent results. See the book's table of contents and read excerpts. |
