The Power of Purpose - the Why - in Leadership

All great leaders know their purpose - and its role in the success of "the organization," whether that organization is the family, the classroom, the building, the district, or even a business.

Purpose is the conduit for meaning and direction - and the clearer we are in knowing our purpose, the "why" of what we do, and sharing it with others, the more apt we are to get people to follow us toward its achievement.

Purpose, simply put, is The Core*:

  • Knowing and understanding the ultimate intent
    • Og Mandino, author of The Greatest Salesman in the World, " recognized that successful people "take on their own lives . . . by charting or choosing their desired destination and the path to reach it."
    • Daniel Pink, author of A Whole New Mind and Drive," encourages each of us to write "our sentence." (Abraham Lincoln's sentence, his purpose, was to save the Union and free the slaves. Winston Churchill's sentence, his purpose, was to inspire fortitude in world war - victory at all costs. "
    • Question: "What's your sentence, your purpose?"
  • Communicating consistently and constantly that intent
    • Paint the picture so others are inspired to follow.
    • Let them know the why!  especially before you focus on the "how"!
    • Tap into the heart of each!
    • Question: Can those you lead explain the purpose in which they are involved?
  • Connecting people and resources to make it happen
    • People want to know they are making a difference. They want to know their actions are worthwhile.
    • Our job as leaders is to build capacity of people to achieve the purpose. That means putting resources toward their achievement of the purpose. It comes in time, money, people, and expertise.
    • Question: How do you eliminate the hurdles so people can achieve the purpose and make the difference!
  • Each staying true to the purpose
    • As a leader you must celebrate what you want to see more of!
    • Constantly connecting with purpose brings unlimited promise.
    • Question: How do you bring out the best in others?

Bottom Line: Purpose connects all contributions and makes every effort count. It brings meaning to the organization!

The Challenge: Identify your purpose. Then do whatever it takes!

Embedded Formative Assessment by Dylan Wiliam

Formative assessment plays an important role in increasing teacher quality and student learning when it's viewed as a process rather than a tool. Emphasizing the instructional side of formative assessment, this book explores in depth the use of classroom questioning, learning intentions and success criteria, feedback, collaborative and cooperative learning, and self-regulated learning to engineer effective learning environments for students.

This book provides you opportunities to . . .

  • Discover five key strategies with research evidence to show the impact of each.
  • Find over 50 practical techniques for classroom formative assessment.
  • Learn why educational achievement matters now more than ever.
  • Witness how minor changes in instruction can affect powerful changes in achievement.

This author, Dylan Wiliam, coauthored a major review of research evidence on formative assessment with Paul Black and has worked many teachers in the United Kingdom and the United States on developing formative assessment practices to support learning.

This course is a great one for those pursuing a TLC grant as well as central office staff and principals who want to learn how to lead professional learning and build capacity through teacher leaders.
